Need info on air vent control

I have a 2007 SES hatchback. It is stuck in the defrost mode. After researching the issue, I found this is not uncommon and is usually a control cable issue. I ordered the contol cable, but when I tried installing it I found the "heater box" is locked up in that position. I could not turn it using the manual shaft that is next to the control cable mounting. It is locked solid, not just stiff or binding.

Whatever the control is ssupposed to be operating is apparently seized up or there is a foreign object lodged somewhere. Is there a way to get access to this "'door" area to see if I can free it?

My specific questions are:

Will removing the blower motor give me any access to this area?

Will removing the center dash vents give me access? If so, how do I remove the vents? I don't see any screws or fasteners. Do ypou just pull/pry them out?

Is there any connection between the blend door and the vent control? If the blend door actuator (I assume it has one) is frozen, will this lock up the vent control?

Obviously I am trying to fix this without pulling the dash and replacing that whole heater assembly, so any info is appreciated.

Problem fixed

Finally tore into the vent controls, since I got no response from posting on a couple sites and was able to free up the vent doors without removing the whole box (and dash to get to it)

I removed the trim panel under the steering wheel which gives access to the vent control assembly where the control cables attach. I removed the cable assemblies (they are a snap fit) and then unbolted (4 bolts) the plastic gearbox which is turned by the control cables. After that, I removed a plastic piece that couples the two doors that control the air. The arm for the lower door was locked solid.

I was able to remove the center dash vents by pulling and prying at the edges with a plastic trim removal tool. After removing the radio and trim panel, this gave me access to remove the vent duct behind the vents. This allowed me to actually get my hands on the stuck door.

With a combination of trying to turn the control arm and pushing on the actual doors through the vent access, the door finally freed up. I still don't know why it was stuck, but I am speculating that there was some kind of debris wedged in the door.

I lubed everything I could get my hands on and reassembled the vents and controls. It took a little while to figure out exactly how everything aligned and fit, but it wasn't too bad. the whole job took a little over an hour and the vent control now works as it should

Right now, I'm really pleased to have fixed the issue without removing the dash and am hoping the problem does not come back.
