Dumbest Questiont Yet: Jack Stands

I know this is probably super stupid, but I'm not that great with cars. If I'm going to jack my Focus up so that I can kick my seized tires, where should I put the jack stands so that it's the safest for me?

Also, would taking a rubbing mallet and hammering away at the tires or using a 2x4 and knocking the rim damanger the rotors or hurt the alignment?

What do you mean "seized tires"? You mean the wheels are stick to the hub/rotors?

If so, you can give it a light kick or blow with a mallet without damage, but don't go crazy. It shouldn't need a ton of force to remove anyways.

The closer to the outside corners of the car you get, the more stable it will be. The pinch welds right behind the front wheels and behind the rears are likely your best bet. If you're hammering the wheel hard enough to push it off stands put there you're using way too much force (and/or awful stands). You shouldn't be under the car while applying the force as well, regardless of how stable the stands are.

I would not use the flange where the rocker and underbody meet. Thats fine to jack it up by, but for jackstand placement i prefer to place my stand under the control arm rear eye. it is very stable there. just remember lign up your stand, lower the car onto the stand and as soon as it touches leave the jack right there.

Yeah, the winter tires I have on are seized to the hub. I'm going to try to spray some liquid wrench or PB Blaster and free it up a bit and then hammer away.

Great tip. I'm sooo stupid so please forgive me. Whereabouts is the control arm rear eye?

Twice while doing my brakes on my 02 ZX5 the tires would not come off no matter how hard I kicked or banged with a mallet. I just left the lugs off, and lowered the jack so the car was back on the ground, and that broke it loose. Didn't have to drive or anything. Maybe you could try that.

Also, remember to do this on a flat surface and to chock the opposite tires. Can never be too safe...

Careful with the pb blaster, try not to get any on the rotor/pads. When you put the wheels back on, you can put a little bit on the back of the wheel where it meets the hub...should help next time you have to take the wheels off.

After you get those wheels off I would suggest using anti-seize in the future to prevent this from happening. Just a thin layer goes a long way in keeping your aluminum wheels from sticking to the cast iron hubs.

As for the jack stands, this is always a good reference. I know it is for the older models but it still applies to the newer ones as well.



Personally, I wouldn't trust the jack-stands under the pinch welds but that's just me. I know people have used them in the past without any problems.
