Lightbulb Should I buy a 2012 Focus HB?

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to sell my aging g35 6mt coupe and move to something more efficient like the Focus Hatchback. I'm a huge fan of this vehicles looks, price and gas efficiency.

It is however quite disheartening to see soo many posts about DCT transmission issues.

With that being said, and trying to keep biases to a minimum, should i buy a focus? What percentage of focus's have these DCT issues?

What should I look for when test driving a 2012 hb?

Thanks for your input guys :)

If you mean his old car, he said 6mt, if you mean the one he's looking at, the thread is about the DCT so I would assume it has the DCT in it.

If it DOES have a DCT, make sure you drive it for more than a few minutes. Drive it in traffic, over speed bumps, etc and see how it feels to you or how it sounds. A little clattering is fine, a lot is not. A tad of shuddering is fine, a lot is not.

The rest of the car is pretty solid, my center console's panels aren't aligned properly and it annoys me but other than that build quality seems nice after a year or so of having it. Engine's good, mpg is good, trunk space is limited because of the size of the trunk lid (wish they'd have made it a bit bigger of an opening) but if you're going HB it won't matter.

Just don't be one of "those guys" and drive it around the block and call it a test drive. Be gone a while.

Since you drive a manual ... I would greatly recommend you to continue driving manually with the Focus.

DCT is so much trouble for nothing... I mean, if you already enjoy your 6 speed manual G35 why not avoid the DCT issues?

If you choose DCT.... your next focus might leaves you a bad taste in your mouth...

Some people swear to never buy a Focus again (extremists!) because of the 2012-2013 DCT apocalypse.

No flamewar between manual vs DCT intended

PS: for the DCT, IMHO I would go for a Focus 2014+ model.

statistically the first year of any new model has more issues then the following years.

BUT this is the used market. so drive it for a good 15-20 minutes. listen/ feel the drive. if it feels good then go for it!

Thank you for the tips.

So not all focus's are plagued by this DCT issue? What would you guys say the percentage is?

I drive in alot of traffic and would be nice during those times a non-manual driver can drive my vehicle.

Another reason is it's rare to find a manual HB focus at the right price/color combo.

Nobody knows the percentage of ones with problems but enough that ford had to come out and admit there were flaws but my guess is at least 10% have had to be serviced so a 1 in 10 chance but maybe that used one may already have it's possible issue resolved. Get a maintenence history.

Agree. I have a Blaze Yellow 2012 with a manual. And I had to look hard to find it. And not going to let it go either!!

I vote No, Stay away. Look at the 2005-2008 Dodge Magnums. You'll find the 05's all day long but the 06-08's were much harder to come by when I was looking for an r/t.
