2002 Engine Options

Greetings fellow Focus Fans,
My daughter bought a 2002 Focus SE when it was new. Pretty straight forward common features and such. It has the 2.0L L4 SOHC 8V engine that just gave up the ghost after 150k miles.
I am thinking of buying it and trying to find a used engine to put in for my son to drive to college.
My question is what engine options do I have when looking for the most painless
transplant. I did find with a quick look through the local classifieds a low mileage 2001 Zetec. Would that be a good possibility or would it be best to look for an exact match?

Thanks, Rich

I'm in no way an expert on this matter, so someone correct me if I'm wrong on anything. But for engines, you have the Zetec, Duratec, or Split Port; all of which are 2.0l engines. My '02 has an SPI engine in it and I've heard the horror stories of the valves dropping, so I've been looking at what options I have for a swap to a Zetec, and this is what I've found so far. Now the part that I've been researching too:It looks like unless you swap out the same motor you'll have to get both the motor AND the transmission, because the bolt patterns on the engines are different - so the transmission is different for each engine as well. (like I said, this is what I've read, and is in no way 100% correct)

Hope this helped

Thank you so much. I am getting to the age where I don't like to have to do a bunch of modifications, and really don't have the skills to do so. I may even tear into this one and see what can be done with it. My machinist told me that once the valve seat problem is fixed they will run forever.
I just finished doing an entire drive train transplant on my 96 Taurus SHO. It was an exact match and went pretty well. I am kind of hoping to find an exact transplant for the Focus that will get it moving until I can afford a rebuild or new engine.

Thanks again for your help, Rich
