2012 5-Door Focus: Roof Rack Capable?

Hi. I am planning on buying a 2012 Hatchback. But I have to buy a car I can put a roof rack on to carry my kayak (est 33#). I know almost nothing about racks. Will the new Focus be capable of having one? I mean, for example, is the roof too round? Anyway, if the answer is that the Focus probably can handle a rack, does the Ford store put the racks on or are there places I can go to for a professional install? Any information, or suggestions, on this subject will be gratefully received. Thanks! Ralph

if the focus has doors that open and no frameless windows... it will be roof rack compatible :)

Just got a 2012 Focus Hatch and am looking to put a roof rack on it. I already have a Yakima cross bar and accessories from my old car so I think I'll stick with that brand. I looked into the Yakima Q Towers system but since the car is so new, Yakima hasn't produced the Q Clips that fit the car yet. I'm now thinking of installing Yakima Landing Pad #11 directly into the roof. I have found that owners of Ford Vista and Edge are able to do this with minimal drilling and no drilling into the actual car's body. Just temporarily remove the weather strip/rain gutter cover, drill a hole through that cover, and then install the rack by threading a bolt through the cover into the car using the pre-drilled holes that holds the cover on. Here's a few examples of what I am talking about on the Vista and the Edge:

Has anyone tried this on a 2012 Focus? I haven't checked to make sure there are bolt holes underneath the rain gutter cover yet but I'm guessing there will be, just like the Vista and Edge. Thanks

there are a variety of roof racks and carriers already listed for the 2012 Focus on the Ford Accessories site:

are these typically easy to install or are they recommended for dealer installs?

I believe and hope they are easy to install and remove. I am planning on eventually getting a set and only want them on the car when I need them. I don't want those eye sores hanging on my beautiful new Focus.

Ford engineers went to a lot of trouble to make the new Focus aerodynamic, and you're going to bolt a rack to the top and put a kayak on it. Can't you fold down the seats and throw it in the back? If you leave the hatch open, it might work like a big ricer wing.

I went ahead and had my Focus drilled for Yakima landing pads. Looks pretty sharp, IMO. I had them mounted at a 34" spread, which is better for surf boards and kayaks. However, I kinda wish it was a bit less because the back cross bar is a bit lower than the front bar based on the curved roof. Skis kinda tip upwards. Not really that big of deal though. Also, wind noise is bad if there is not a ski rack on it. I will either buy a fairing or remove the rack when not in use. I haven't tried to remove it yet, but supposedly it's not too hard and takes about five minutes. On one tank of gas driving to the coast with surf boards, and then driving to the mountains with three skis, three people, and the car loaded to rim with gear, I got 30 mpg. Here's some pics:
