Ford Escort Concept

The 2013 Shanghai auto show is kicking into high gear, and Ford is entering the fray with this Escort concept. Aimed at the Chinese market, the small sedan previews a potential low-cost alternative to the brand’s upscale Focus. That’s right, despite bringing back one of Ford’s most widely recognized compact-car names—the badge previously has been used on a variety of small cars on multiple continents—the Escort isn’t designed to replace the Focus. Instead, it would be sold alongside the bestselling (in China) Focus as a more affordable, slightly less-flashy C-segment offering.

We agree it seems weird to think of a car company offering two similar vehicles in the same class but at different price points. But in China, the compact-car market is hot, and it’s actually split in two, with the dividing line being price. Multiple companies offer two compact cars—one that is designed to be affordable, and another that’s nicer and, in the case of the global manufacturers, closer to what is sold in Europe and the U.S. Ford currently sells in China both the excellent, current Focus (we’ve named it to our 10Best list two years in a row) and the last-generation European model, as the Focus Classic. The Escort is designed to replace the Focus Classic.

Escort Your Eyes Over this Beauty
If this is what low-rent looks like in China, sign us up. The Escort might have buyers looking for a less-expensive and more straightforward car in its sights, but Ford clearly wanted to make sure that it didn’t leave those same buyers out in the cold when it came to style. The sedan wears supremely handsome yet understated sheetmetal, looking like a fuzzy cross between the Fusion and the Focus. The Blue Oval’s signature, Aston Martin–like hexagonal grille and a pair of LED-stuffed headlights dominate the Escort’s face, while the rear of the car is clean and largely devoid of fluff. Ford is short on specifics, but the company hints that the Escort is longer than the Focus sedan. From our perspective, that certainly looks to be true—the rear doors appear much longer than do the Focus’s stubby aft portals.

ord also is light on details when it comes to the Escort concept’s powertrain and cabin technology, saying only that the Escort concept will appeal to Chinese customers seeking “a high level of technology.” Based on its quiet, upscale looks alone, we can’t imagine the Escort’s engine lineup will be particularly spicy. It seems when it comes to the Escort, the critical numbers have to do with price and the amount of sales in the Chinese compact-car segment. According to Ford, more than 25 percent of cars sold in China are compacts, and it believes the Escort “represents the idea that you can get a compact vehicle with a premium aesthetic . . . without having to pay a premium price tag.

So the escort is going to become a mid-size sedan? Ford has always been good at making all the models look good and look apart from each other, but this is getting ridiculous.

We don't need another GM line up.

I don't know why they keep going with the least attractive color for their concepts though... seriously.

Love it, of course I like Escorts, I have owned 3 in my life. The front is just like the new Fusions and C-Max's.
