2000 ZX3 -- My Performance Q&A Thread

Rather than ask questions about "what does what?" in a billion different threads, I am going to compile everything here, and ask the questions as needed.

First up:

One of the next modifications I want to do to my ZX3 (after I am done installing a complete MSD ignition setup) is a short ram air intake.

I have seen several decent (and expensive) setups from AEM, Steeda, Weapon R amongst others. I've also seen some no-name brands going for really cheap (like, $25 with free shipping cheap) on eBay.

What is the difference in performance gain in these? Am I just paying for the name badge?

Here's an example of what I found on eBay:

What is the general consensus on this?

nope...that wont work

you need the platform in which the MAF sensor sits upon.

i over paid for it, but at this point im sick of looking at it. it doesnt have a cone air filter anymore because it went missing. and also it has a small cracks on the MAF platform from where the previous owner over tightened and screws and the plastic split. but that could be fixed cheap with any rubber sealant compound.

also if you dont already have a tune from 1turbofocus (tom) or another vendor from what i remember you need a tune for the SRI, but not for a CAI.

The key to an intake, becides the MAF platform noted above, is a quality filter. K&N is very tried and true and it is cleanable. I have an ITG on mine, once again, its cleanable.

To be honest with you, a K&N drop in filter is all you will really need.

I'm sure any of these will be fine. But intakes don't really add much power. They are fun though. Make neat noises.

Quick question, does anyone know what this rusty thingamabob is? It's a real eyesore on my Focus, especially since I am in the process of modifying it and getting it to look real pretty.

Today I installed the MSD 8241 coil pack and wires. I'm searching around for more parts for my car, and I see a high voltage coil. What is the difference between the coil and coil pack that I've installed? Can I use both with each other?

That is your EGR valve(and a really rusty one at that).

The OEM Motorcraft coil is a good coil. You are wasting your money buying something else at this point. Taylor plug wires are very, very good.

As for the linked coil, No you can't use them together.

Thanks, freemind! What exactly is an EGR valve and how hard are they to replace?

So... pretty general question here I suppose:

My overall goal is to take the next 8-10 years building my ZX3 up to a street/show car and then pass it down to my son when he is old enough to drive. I am looking to completely customize it from the exterior (body kit, headlights and taillights), interior (leather bucket seats, harness and leather rear seat cover) down to the engine -- as I've already installed 75% of a full MSD ignition and am currently looking at my next upgrade being a Pace Setter blacked out header. Eventually, I do plan on having it fully tuned and supercharged.

All that being said, here is my question:

Should I build off the stock engine that is currently in the car or build on a crate motor?
