So i have a couple friends that just did it to their neons and it got me thinking what is the purpose of it and does it benefit anything and what needs to be done for it to work properly?

pointless mod. egr is closed at idle and wot. you will lose mpg and will have higher combustion chamber temps

Really bad idea. As SVT5.0 points out, it's off at idle and WOT anyhow. It reduces pumping losses (this means improves gas mileage) at mid-range. It also lowers combustion temperatures and flame-front speed which prevent deadly cylinder detonation.

if its such a bad idea, why do they make block off plates? why do svtf's not have egr, and why would everyone turn off egr in their tunes?

SVT's have VCT (varible cam timing) that replaces the EGR valve.

The EGR is a piece of smog equipment. By turning it off with a tune and then removing it you basicly remove another part to break. Again it is closed at idle and WOT so most people that remove it, are preformance geared. Because they are running their car at WOT they don't want to put the hot air back into their intake. Most people in the Zetec world delete it when they put on a SVT header or turbo, thats why they make block off plates.

Yeah, mine is deleted as well. I put in an SVT Header though. I would prefer to have the SVT Header w/ EGR Connect, just for the added security. But in reality, you will be fine with removing it.
