Automatic transmission performance

Hi guys,
Just picked up an '02 SE wagon. Seems to be lots of performance info on most systems of the car but not a lot of help for the auto trans. Anybody have any experience with performance upgrades and limitations of them?

Lots of info in this article from Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. This link is the transmission article but the entire series is full of great performance tips and follows the build with lots of pics and details. Worth a read.

With a custom tune there is a lot that helps the ATX , line psi , shift rpm etc

If you need more I would look into Lentech Automatics then did the ATX in my car that held 723HP and ran a best of 10.95 @ 137 in the 1/4

I have an auto with a lentech valve body, head polish, adj cam gears, focus central race header, svt intake, svt exhaust, 2k IM, ported tb, and chipped and I will say my focus runs very well. Great Lowend and stays with power to about 6200 rpm.

Tom can set you with a tune and synthetic ( Mobil 1) ATF fluid helps as well.

I've recently decided to go mild NA rather than mild turbo build (my main concern about the turbo build would be running higher octane fuel$$) so it's reassuring to hear that you can get some good low end out of it. Your list of mods sounds similar to what I'm picturing but with some stage 1 cams. What kind of mileage do you get? Thanks for the advice guys!

EDIT: After reading around it looks like I'm going to end up running higher octane fuel anyways. Looks like any mild build with a tune will require higher octane. I read there's an 87 octane tune available but I have a feeling I won't be satisfied with it.

The code of the transmission provides info on what type and how much the transmission is rated for. I read this a while ago so correct me if im wrong. 4f27e. 4-speed, FWD, 270 divided by 2 gives you max torque. Dont remember what the E stands for.

What are the differences of transmission shift quality/upgrade via a tune vs. a valve body kit (http://www.lentechautomatics.com/4f27eproducts.html)? I would think just getting a tune and controlling things from the PCM would feel similar to the valve body upgrade. I think, without fully understanding both, that a mildly modified Focus could take advantage of both. Does a custom tune change any if the valve body kit is installed vs. not installed?
