540 miles on one tank

I have previously had one tank over 500 miles, 510 to be exact, but today I beat that with a tank of 540 miles and 11.89 gallons or 45.4mpg. This was cruising at mostly 60mph with peaks near 80 (coasting down mountains) and slowing down to 25 in towns. The route, from Tonopah NV to Salt Lake City UT, the long way (6->376->50->6->36->80->15) was 536 miles and I started the trip with 4 miles on the tank from the night before.

OK, that kind of mileage at those speeds is not to be expected and I had, in fact, a mostly tail-wind of about 15mph aiding me most of the way. Also, there is very little traffic on most of the route so I didn't have much need to stop-and-go except for a bit through Ely and a couple towns beyond that.

I'm guessing that the tail-wind probably added 3-4mpg today.

This was the last day of a three day trip I did from SLC->Vegas->Tonapah->SLC and the total distance, on three tanks of gas, was 1366 miles using 33.7 gallons of gas for a net average of 40.5mpg with speeds on I-15 as high as 80mph and averaging probably a bit over 70mph from SLC to Vegas.

My net average for 17,105 miles since I got the car is 37.9mpg.

That's great! I went to Myrtle Beach from Buffalo a couple weeks ago. I averaged 37.6 over the entire trip. 90 mph all the way down 79 from Erie to Pittsburgh thanks the the group that passed me. After that cruise was mostly set at 75. I got my best tank of 39.x going through the mountains of WV and VA. This is also with a couple hundred nonhighway miles driven in Myrtle Beach. I almost made the 500 to empty club with the display reading 497. That kind of irked me a tad.

I really want to know how you guys achieve mpg this high.

My 2012 Titanium with sport package will not do better than 35 mpg (80 mph on hwy) for extended trips.

i think 35mpgs at 80mph is pretty good.. only one or two mpg off epa estimates and u need to consider hills, wind, and general terrain when assessing mileage.

Going 80 mph is the issue; try 70 and you'll start seeing closer to 40 mph.

It's the wheels that come with the handling package. So big, heavy, and not aerodynamic. When I switch from my 15" wheels and snow tires to the 18" wheels for the summer months, my mpg drops by 3-4mpg easily. For the past two years it's been like clockwork when I switch from summer wheels to my winter setup and vise versa.

Yes, all stock.

As I mentioned, I had a pretty decent tail-wind most of the last day and in fact, I had more-or-less a tail-wind all three days. Sometimes the timing is good...

Hills can make it harder but aren't necessarily a killer either. Yesterday, while doing 540 miles on a tank and getting over 45mpg I had the tail-wind of about 15mph or maybe more, but I also had a good many mountain passes to go up and down. What you lose going up you gain going down unless you have to ride the brakes. There was one down-mountain stretch that I was able to put it in neutral (engine still on for steering and brakes) and coast for about 10 miles above my cruising speed of 60mph. A slight decline and the tail-wind made that possible.

One thing I failed to mention and probably amounted to at least 1mpg was that the starting and ending elevation were different. Tonopah, where I started, is at 6000 feet and SLC, where I ended, is at 4200 feet so losing 1800 feet over that distance works out to just about 1mpg so without the elevation loss my mileage would have been more like 44-44.5mpg.

On much of the route the posted speed limit was either 70mph or 65mph but I cruised at 60mph as there was very little traffic and what few cars did catch up to me had no problem passing -- I would not have done that on a busier road -- I'm not "that guy!" The thing is, I wasn't in a hurry to get from one place to another and was in fact enjoying the ride. I frickin love this car!
