ST sound symposer

Sorry if this has been addressed already but i looked and could not find it.


Does anyone w/ an ST find the sound symposer to be too loud or too intrusive in ANY type of driving?

Can the symposer be 'defeated' or muted somewhat if once chooses by blocking the sound tube or whatever transmits the sound to the interior?

i'm thinking of trading my focus for an ST but not too keen on the symposer idea esp at surburban/hiway speeds and feel it may be 'too much'.

That depends on your age.
For teenage boys, it's probably not loud enough.

I didn't like it, it sounded too fake. It quieted down when I added an intake and tune, but there is a fuse you can pull to shut it off. I'm not sure which one but I read about others doing that on the ST forums.

It wasn't a speaker as far as I know, but the only electronic component is the baffle/ valve that opens or closes to allow the induction noise into the cabin. More so under acceleration and what not, but closes it off somewhat if not entirely at a highway cruise.

I.e. it was a mechanical tube ducting the sound into the cabin but there was a butterfly valve or something that varied the amount of sound getting into the cabin.

Ford does not use a speaker as VW does. My friend with a ST like it. The car is very quiet and this actually allows you to hear the engine. I would agree and I have a turbo with a loud bov on my Contour.

Allegedly the Fiesta ST will use a simpler all mechanical sound tube with a check ball or something rather than the electronic system, but until we know more I'm not 100% sure.

The Fiesta uses something similar, but it functions in more of a linear manner instead of the on/off that the Focus has. So sound will linearly increase with throttle position and RPM. Reviewers have said that it still does a great job of keeping it quiet while cruising and loud at WOT. They also say the sound isnt quite as pleasing as the deep warble the Focus makes.

Also, when I drove the Focus ST I liked the noise. But I'd still prefer an aftermarket exhaust that lets you hear intake AND exhaust noise.

It is not intrusive at all. It only comes on when you are putting your foot down aggressively. I drive with colleagues and they have no idea it is anything but a normal focus.

It is a sound tube. It can be unplugged if you want, but you probably won't.

It doesn't feel artificial. I like it. If I want to make a bunch of noise outside, I do it at the track....on a real machine....
