Manual side mirrors won't adjust properly - 2000 se

I just got my 2000 se. The manual side mirrors will not adjust far enough away from the car. Even when the control stick is pushed all the way (for example, fully left on the driver's side), the side of the car fills half the mirror.

I pulled things apart and it seems like maybe there's too much slack on the cable that controls the horizontal movement.

Is it possible that somehow the cables were mixed up?
If yes, is it feasible to swap the cables around?

Or should I just buy a new pair of generic mirrors for $50...

from reading other posts it appears that removing the stick control on the manual mirrors is an hour+ long ordeal. so i buckled and just bought some aftermarket mirrors for $38.

BTW the torx screw that holds the mirror on is a T20.
