If you read the owners manual it actually says that the use of premium will make it run worse under certain conditions. Those that say they get better mpg with it are fooling themselves. High octane fuel burns SLOWER and not as easily as lower octane that is the point of it.

How does a simple tune then make it ok for the car to run premium?

Unhappy

I ran 93 without a tune for two or three years. About a month ago I switched back to Regular 87, and I'm not noticing any difference.

I can only imagine what parts I could've bought with that money...

While you are correct about that being the 'point of it', you are incorrect as to thinking that it isn't beneficial. Because higher octane fuels have a more controlled burn, spark timing can be advanced in order to effectively extract more power than lower octane fuels. The sooner you can begin fuel burn in the compression stroke, the more fuel can be burnt for power.

Low octane fuels burn less predictably, so timing has to be retarded in order to prevent pre-detonation or 'pinging'. Because this burn is started later in the compression cycle, more of the fuel is still being burnt off as the piston has already begun it's downward movement on the power stroke. This is actually wasted energy. That is the price paid for using the less expensive, higher volatile fuel.

That being said, I don't think that any of the Focus line had fuel mapping strategies to take advantage of anything over 87 prior to the Mk3-but I don't know 100%. If not then the use of anything over 87 is indeed a waste because the ECU cannot effectively adjust the timing to take advantage of the higher octane. You will end up with the same result-excessive fuel being burned in the power stroke due to not being able to get it burning early enough in the compression stroke.

In regards to the higher-octane burning cleaner...the truth lies more in the fact that the more expensive fuel usually gets more additives (and this is dependent on the brand that you use). More additives can be great, but you can be just as equally hurting yourself with the higher cost fuel not being completely burnt. If there is no fuel mapping for above 87, I would recommend running only 87 and then using a fuel system cleaner (I prefer Chevron with Techron) once every 15,000 miles or longer. You will have the most 'bang-for-your-buck' (pardon the pun)

I've heard tom is better with zetecs then duratecs. I'd say go with fswerks. They might charge you to get it tuned but it's not like you would be doing it everyday and they're good quality. not saying tom isn't but sometimes you gotta pay to play.
