Toyo Tires Saturday Night at the Rallies Series

First post here on FF, so i thought I'd tell all about an introductory navigational rally series, held in SW Ontario. For this year, the series has sponsorship through Toyo Tires, with a set being given away at the end of the year.

This seasons first event was held last Saturday in Woodstock, and after not rallying in 4 months, there was a little rust, and placed 9th out of 13 class entries. Have a little work to do. Here's the series poster, available through http://www.kwrc.on.ca/ ... feel free to drop a message for more info

Toyo Tires Saturday Night at the Rallies Series

This is a series of six navigational rallies aimed at beginner level competitors. The events are about 100 km long and take about two hours.

For 2013 the events are on the following dates:

Saturday April 6, running out of Woodstock.

Saturday May 11, with the Blossom Rally, running out of the Mohawk Inn, Campbellville

Saturday June 15, running out of Tillsonburg

Sunday July 28, our annual BBQ, Multiple starting points and finishing at Pinehurst Conservation Area. This is the "Mini-Monte Rally"

Saturday August 24, running out of Kitchener.

Saturday September 14, running out of Brantford. (a bit longer with more interesting navigation)

Entry fees are normally $20.00 per car. Instructions are simple, average speeds are well below the posted limits and most of the roads are paved.

Navigational rallying involves following the assigned route at the average speeds given and arriving at checkpoints along the way at the correct time. The locations of the checkpoints are not given in the instructions.

When you arrive at a checkpoint your time is taken as you pass the control board. You then pull off the road and go back on foot to the control and get you sticker with the arrival and leaving times. The time early or late from the calculated ideal time is your penalty. Once you have got your time into a control your penalty is set; you can't erase that penalty by driving faster or slower on the way to the next checkpoint.

In general we are using the standard rules for rallying in Ontario, but as these are short rallies we have a adjusted the length odometer check and made some other allowances. Typically at team consists of two people but we will allow more people in the car for these events. All who participate will be required to sign a waiver.

If you would like to see a sample set of instructions, they are posted here

We will be using Time Allowances in this rally. Click here for a description of how they are used.

The route runs Tillsonburg to Lake Erie and back and is about 120 km long including about 70 Km. of good gravel roads, all the rest are paved. The back roads around the Otter Creek are interesting for their terrain, twists an turns. The instructions are fairly simple; accumulative distance and turns, tulip diagrams, lists and a straight line map. No special equipment is required but a watch, pen and clipboard will come in handy. A calculator will help with the timing but most beginner competitors wisely decide to concentrate on keeping on route rather than doing exact timing.

Steve always finds a route to keep the both drivers and navigators interested.

We've posted the waiver and minor waivers in .pdf format so you can read them and fill them out ahead of time if needed.
This could be important if you plan to run with a minor for whom who you do not have guardianship authority.

Minor Waiver
Parental Consent
General Waiver
Entry Form You can fill the form out ahead of the rally to save time at registration.
Here are some sample instructions

Make sure you bring your valid vehicle ownership and insurance slips with you to the start, as well as a permission letter if you are not the owner of the vehicle.
