Wow.

Havok, no offense but you're wrong. If the clutch is not being slipped in any way, the RPM is the same. If you know that the gearing is fixed, then you know that the rpm can't climb unless the tires are moving faster. A stiffer RMM will help the torque transfer, but will not make the car any more powerful. It will feel more responsive, but that's pretty much it. You can add more fuel and air to get more power out of that RPM, but if it is 3000 rpm at a given speed it will be 3000 rpm regardless of how much fuel/air is being used to keep it there.

It's the same principle as to why it doesn't matter how long an extension is on a torque wrench. A longer extension is more likely to twist due to the torque, but ultimately the output will be the same. All you're doing with an aftermarket RMM is shortening the extension.

Edit: I understand that changing the RMM doesn't change the length of its installation. The analogy is in regards to the energy transfer...

hey reading what havok was talking about and, maybe i'm a noob but I think he has a point - but I could be wrong.
isn't havok basically saying "if the car is in cruise control at X speed and begins an incline (hill) that the RPM will go up" . Isn't that true though? Wouldn't it because it's in automatic and the computer senses and uphill, so it downshifts, which makes the RPM go up. Am I wrong? my 97 oldmobile cutlass did this lol.
the new focus, when in auto and going downhill ,if you take your off the gas, it will downshift to slow you down. Also it will downshift if I am cruising on a highway an encounter an a big incline (hill) - which will in turn increase RPM because of the downshift.

or am i just confusing myself and others? lol
Thx.

The only thing is that havoc has a 5 speed manual. So if he is in 5th gear with the cruise on, it would not be able to downshift itself. If anything, it would just give more gas to keep the RPMs where they are, but they would not go up if he was still at the same speed.

Totally different ball game with an automatic transmission. Havoc has a 5 speed. Unless he is manually downshifting the transmission, his gearing remains constant, thus his engine rpms will not change.

The engine will expend more energy because of the higher loads, which is why people typically down shift (or why the automatic downshifts for you) when you're going up the hill.

Oh I didn't realize he was manual transmission.
Well i'm no mechanic (by a long shot) but maybe there's a problem with his transmission and/or particular gears.
