I also suggest hammering a socket onto it before trying anything too drastic.

The head doesn't really look that bad - at least in the photo. But then the bracket, is it rusted to the filter too?

Replaced #4 Piston, Rings, Rod+Bearings, AERA Re-Manufactured Cylinder Head and a light Hone. Then CLEANED the hell out of everything.

I tried hammering on a 9/32 and a 7mm and they wouldn't go on. I can't really get any extractors in the bolt because it is too tucked away, and I don't feel like buying long drill bits that I might break. Also can't get any purchase on the clamp with bolt cutters :-(

So I started cutting the bracket with a hacksaw blade to it is too slow. My plan now is to put a little cut off wheel on a dremel at work and slowly cut through the bracket. Then once the filter is out of the way I'll be able to work on the bolt more easily. Or maybe I'll just leave it and hold the new filter with zip ties...

Whoever said changing the fuel filter is easier than changing the oil must have lived in Mexico or something

I don't think one fuel filter could last 200k odd miles and eleven years. But it sure looks like it was never changed before.

So this morning I disconnected the pump fuse, ran the engine until it was really sputtering, and then CARFULLY cut the fuel filter bracket with a cutting wheel on a dremel.

Ta dah


Then I just took out the filter, cut down the bracket with tin snips, put on the new filter and attached it to the stub of the bracket with wire. Would have been too easy if it weren't for the stupid rust everywhere.

I took it for a quick spin, and changing the fuel filter eliminated the problem I was having with poor fuel delivery, which was causing chugging at low throttle input and low rpm combinations.

Unless your coffee is about as black as straight grounds, then yes, it was.

And that stupid bolt is still there, stuck and stripped. For all I care it will stay there until it gets melted away for scrap along with the body.

Good choice of wire! That looks like solid copper insulated, which will hold it's tie...

Stranded tends to work loose even when tied in a knot!
