Knocking/loud rattle from front left side of engine

Hello everyone,

I have a 2001 TDCi, 100K miles, manual.

Recently stopped the car after a 10 mile drive and noticed a very loud mechanical knocking/banging/rattle like noise coming from the front left wheel area - could be from inside the engine on that side.

Depressing the clutch seemed to make it slightly worse but the noise was still there when the clutch was released. Drove an extra 200 yards and stopped car. The noise was still there but I could not tell where exactly it was coming from - wheel well or engine. The noise was still there while the car was stationary. After switching the engine off and starting it again the noise disappeared.

I then drove the car for 2 days without the noise occurring again but yesterday I noticed it for a few seconds whilst driving around a corner - but it stopped without me having to stop the car or switch off the engine.

I have looked in the engine bay and wheel well and cannot see any obvious causes.

In searching the forum for similar symptoms, experts point to possible water pump problems, CV joint, engine mount or clutch issues.

My problem is very intermittent so I do not know how to diagnose any more. But it is such a loud mechanical knocking it is alarming and I do not want to break down on a main road.

Are there any additional checks I can do to isolate the problem? I will try to move the engine in case it is a lose engine mount but I would have thought that would occur all the time.

Thanks very much in advance,

Ian
