52 MPG in my 2012 Focus Hatch

Been away from the forums for awhile due to fun Army things and moved to my new "home" (Duty Station).

Anyways. While me and my wife were driving from Texas to Virginia. I was driving the 16ft Penske Moving truck towing a 06 Infiniti G35x weighing in at 17,900 lbs. I got 9-10 MPG with that rig. We drove between 60-65 MPH (Unless the posted speed was slower of course) the whole way to Virginia.

My wife followed me in my Focus. We stopped and filled up one time and I asked her if she needed gas as this was the second time we were stopping to fill up the moving truck. She said no its good. I was thinking we had just drove over 300 miles and it should be close to needing some gas. So I filled up the Focus and calculated the gas mileage using Fuelly as I do every single fill up since I bought it, never missed one fill up. To my surprise, Fuelly said 52 MPG. I didn't believe it so I checked the old receipts with the mileage on them because I have to keep fuel receipts while moving in the Military. It came out to 52 MPG again. Insane.

Here is the proof.

Whoever moved my thread should go ahead and PM me with the reason why they moved it to "Ford Focus & General Car Chat" instead where I had placed it originally in the MK3 Focus Forum, which is the correct forum for my topic.

Perhaps a tailwind and the slipstream effect.
A tailwind really helps out with mpgs. And driving close probably helps too.

Yeah, 52 mpg makes me suspect "drafting" was part of the mix. But nevertheless, it just shows you what kind of economy can be had with these cars.

Now, my first long trip will be mental math... do I want to save a few bucks or just bag it and go 5 over the limit to get there quicker? Is it worth 10 bucks to get there a couple of hours earlier? Decisions, decisions.

While that is true, but, in order to have an appreciable effect on mpg, she would have to be pretty damn close (like 10 ft off his bumper), anything over 90ft, which is still VERY close (your still in the trucks blind spot), the effect is negligable. And at 150ft (min safe distance at 55mph), does nothing, in fact, the turbulence makes it worse. Mythbusters covered this on an episode:
http://green.autoblog.com/2007/10/28...-improve-mile/

It was confirmed, BUT, you have to be dangerously close to see a real gain.

This constant moving of threads has gotten completely out hand. Several of my threads that were specific to the '12 model were moved too. Moderators, move this thread back to the mk3 section!

I think my wife was pretty close off the bumper of the trailer so people wouldn't get in between us and she would get shuffled back into traffic. Alot of the driving we did was flat land not too many hills. You can see when we hit the hills when my fuel mileage dropped to 32 MPG, we were going through the eastern part of Tennessee when we filled up that time.
