Just got 2006 ZX4- few small issues & questions

Hi,

So I just got my 2006 ZX4 SES tonight! Yay! Newest car I've ever had! So, I got it home from a few hours away and didn't realize till I got in town that I seem to have a few small bugs to work out.

Ok, first- I have no reverse lights. Not the fuse, is there a switch or something?

Next- my left blinker kinda of flits on and off when I'm driving (moving), it's not actuating the turn signal, its only on the dash indicator. Would it be grounding out on something? Something in the column or the dash?

My cruise control doesn't work- the light comes on. What I found was the cable going to what I think is the speed control until to the throttle lever it broken at the lever (coming out of the housing). Is this something I can fix or do I need to track down a new cable, or a whole speed control unit? Oh! And also, the plastic housing that goes over the throttle lever asymbly (if that's what it called?) is missing, what it it called and where would you get it?

And a few stupid questions: my compressor kinda makes a burbling sound when it kicks on- is that normal- my last few cars were r12 :) ? And I keep hearing a motor or something under the passenger dash area when the key is on- what is that?

And! Last one, I swear! The safety lock on the drivers door control doesn't seem to do anything- what is it suppose to do?

Thank you in advance for answering all that!!

the motor with your compressor is the heater/fan motor, as far as i know. and the reverse lights were a problem i know for all 00-04 foci, and i believe 05-07 as well. the culprit, first check fuses and bulbs, but the switch that sits on top of the tranny (atleast on ib5 and mtx75) is notorious for going out. my reverse lights don't work either on my 00, i'm just not experienced enough to dig in my engine and fix it

That's a lot of electrical problems. I think the first thing you should investigate is the battery terminals and the wires that go to those terminals. Next is fuses. When I say investigate the wires going to the terminals- I had some freaky issues with the 2 small black wires that go to the negative battery terminal. These are held down by a nut. One of the ring terminals on one of those wires was broken. I had to cut out the ring terminal, and install a new one, then put the wire back on.

The cruise control: I don't know if there is a separate cable. If you can figure out how to disconnect it from the cruise module that will help. This is something I'd search a junkyard for, but you can contact our Ford OEM parts specialist from Village Ford in the Vendor section and ask what a replacement part would cost. He will know if there is a simple cable replacement or you're stuck with a whole new cruise actuator. I've never heard of this happening.

The plastic cover is optional. It won't hurt anything not to have it. I sometimes remove those and toss them.

Another question- what transmission do you have? AT or MT? That might have something to do with the problem of the reverse light switch. For now, hopefully it's a grounding problem at the battery terminal. You shouldn't have the same hatch wiring problems that hatchbacks have, but something in the trunk might've damaged the wiring to the reverse lights- and that's why one of the turn signals is not working correctly. First, check the battery, then we'll move on to diagnosing the problems one by one.

OH, and did you check fuses? Water always gets in the license plate lights and blows fuses as well as causes wiring damage there that can affect the operation of the other lights in the rear of the car.

A lot of electrical problems? Here I am thinking that ain't bad for a used car! Coming to this from having several jeeps with all the typical and notorious electrical problems.... I'm used to keeping a fire extinguisher on hand ;)

Anyway, I got a pretty good deal on the car, so I'm not totally upset about the issues... Yet. $5000 for a 2006 with 68k miles and one owner. I guess the car had sat for a little last year after they had bought a new car. - side question- would you recommend running some injectors cleaner through it for a tank if the gas was old?

Yes, checked all the fuses first thing I noticed the problems. It's a 5 Speed, the auto parts store was mentioning a neutral safety switch- could that be the problem?

I bought the car, checked all the other lighting, forgot the check the reverse lights. The blinker thing didn't start until I'd been driving for a few hours and 100 miles later. Like I said about that though, it isn't making the turn signal light up outside of the car, just on the dash. Which leads me to believe its something in the wiring system directly related to the dash light indicator in the column or dash? It definitely happening as a result of road vibration. Could it be something as silly as a bad relay?

Here is the broken cruise cable (look to the right and up from the accelerator cable)

Thank you for your help so far! I'm going to go try the cruise control diagnosis someone had written up on the forum and see if the system thinks it has any electrical faults aside from the mechanical one.

Also, I plan to make a trip to ford soonish and see what they have to say seeing the problems in person; but it will have to wait a payday :)

The clip that holds your blinker plug in may be broken , mine did that same thing . The light outside the car will stay on but the blinker light inside flickers , i taped mine untill i replaced the plug

Yeah- mines doing the opposite I think, it flits on in the dash only when I'm not using the blinker. When I do use the blinker, it's fine. Where is this plug?

I'm sorry- I meant, the plugs? At bulbs, or is it something under the dash?

The actual plugs that plug into the headlight , if the retainer clip is broken they will vibrate out , and make the flicker your seeing on the dash , you can tape em together because the bulb twist out anyways
