Mk3 and ST Roof-racks!

With all the questions in the Mk3 section about roof-racks I thought it necessary to have one thread with pictures and information about said racks.

If you post your pics, please add the specifics of your setup, ie. brand, bar size, tray brand, any problems and solutions, etc.

If it has already been mentioned there is no need to add information that is already available. But feel free to add pics!

Let's give this a try. If you find something helpful, throw a rep point that person's way.

Enjoy,

Here is an excellent write-up by wilsonfocus86 for his Thule set-up:

As I currently sit:

Before my lowz:

Initial setup, sans tray:

My setup:

Thule AeroBlade: ARB53 (Silver)
Thule Foot Pack: 480R Rapid Traverse Pack
Fit Kit: KIT1627
RockyMounts Tray: Euro Pitchfork (Orange)

I followed Thule's installation instructions as a guideline. Ultimately I ended up tweeking it myself. Then, when I went with the lowz, I had to adjust it even further.

In order to level the tray with the ground I put the front feet at 10" from the glass and the rear feet 27" back from the center of the front bars. That was for a 2" in drop on the car.

Interested to know how is the wind noise and effect on fuel economy?

Umm... No difference in fuel economy that I can discern. At all.

Noise level is zero to none. That is however until I open my moonroof...then I get an odd whistling noise. I don't think this is due to the anything other than the fact I bought the bars used off of eBay and they came (I knew before hand) with a small bend, nearly imperceptible. I think that bend causes the whistling.

You are correct. I do not know, however, if they remade or reworked them. I heard that they didn't and weren't going to, but I know of some guys on the boards running the Yakima setup. I'll direct one of them to this thread.

the bend should not cause the whistling. you are getting the noise from where the wind runs between the clips and the body. the same thing happens on my escape. i do that that my yakima on my 2011 has a little bit of road noise, but a lot less than the sarafi rack on the escape so i can live with it. i am thinking that a fairing may help.

Possible. Most others, namely Zillon, reported no sound whatsoever. Although he didn't have a moonroof...

I like the look, sans fairing, and it is definitely quieter than the rack w/ fairing on my '08 Altima used to be.

All in all, it's tolerable.

54'' Yakima Crossbars
Yakima Q-Towers
Yakima Q-Clips
44'' Yakima Fairing
Yakima Copperhead Bike Mount

Sourced the Q-towers, Bars, and Bike Mount on craigslist. Bought the Q-clips and fairing new.

I know mine isn't a roof rack but because I didn't like the fact the rack was not a built on unit from Ford and it has the chance to mar the paint where it contacts I opted for the hitch style rack.

BTW, I do like the way the roof racks look, they look really nice but I had one on my CR-V which was taller and it made for a pain in the a$$ for parking garages and such. This way it keeps the bike low and out of the way of any oncoming rocks that may chip or even destroy a carbon frame. I also like the fact I can take the rack off in the off-season. The bike is sitting on top of the strap because I just washed it after Sunday's muddy, gritty race...
