I could see a deal breaker over auto VS manual, or a 5 speed vs 7 or 8 speed. I don't see the big deal of one gear in a focus.

I really would like a 6th gear for overdrive.

BUT, I think Ford is stuck in the mindset that only performance models need 6 soreness manuals, which I really don't get.
The 5-spd is at 3k rpm at 70 mph .... And since the ST developed near max torque near 1700 rpm it can handle a lower rpm in 6th gear than the standard non-turbo Focus.

Why are car manufacturers still using 4 stroke engines? The design is over 100 years old!

Because Miller cycle engines weren't that great, neither were rotaries, or the Atkinson cycle which is also a 4 stroke. I figured you were referring to the Otto cycle that has been around since 1876. Really, 4 valves per cylinder were introduced in the 20's in the Dusenburg cars, but didn't take off until much later.

Now the 6 strokes have been around for a long time too, but there are multiple versions of how this works. You should read up on it. The 2 that I thought were most interesting were the Crower 6 stroke, and the M4+2. I'd only read stuff like this for fun. I've seen a lot of good ideas come and go over the years, and I can tell you for sure that if there is a good idea that will increase efficiency- it will die. Global oil conspiracy? Possibly. I don't really know, but I do know that great ideas like the rotor-button engine and other alternatives just disappear. Even the Coates spherical rotating valve has all but disappeared as a means of automotive locomotion- it still survives in some high end natural gas generator engines.

If it's at 3k rpms at 70 mph, how can you argue that it doesn't need another overdrive gear to knock it down closer to 2500? It would result in significant gains over the long run. There's no excuse not to squeeze all the mileage you can out of the car, especially when you have to compete with EVERY other car in its class getting 40 (because they all have 6 speeds). It's a deal breaker to me because I'm looking to get a car that gets great mileage (don't suggest prius) and one that has all the latest technology. It's pretty much narrowed down between the focus and dart, though the more I read, they both have some common problems that make me hesitant to get either. I don't care about how it compares to other cars performance wise either, it's a focus and shouldn't be raced anyway. I already have a 400+ hp car and anything less feels like a joke to me. I want to want this car, but I just can't without a 6 speed. There's no logical argument or benefit as to why they can't put one in.
