How to: fog lights as turn signals

After being inspired by norcalfocus01's "Billed Thread" http://forums.focaljet.com/team-rigz...led-thred.html
I decided to wire up my own fog light turn signals, but I wanted them to still work as fog lights, and since I'm in Canada, I need daytime running light compliance, so the plan was to make it work with my DRL fog mod.

so the lights would behave this way.
with ignition on: fog lights are on as DRL, interupt the light to signal
with headlights on, fogs off: signal directly with the fog light
with headlights and fogs on: interupt the fog light to signal

I knew how relays work, due to previously wiring up rally lights, so I went to work drawing it up.

The most concise wiring i could come up with had 2 relays on each side. Also i had to learn about and include a diode (a one way electric circuit). After the first attempt at wiring, i had a fast blinker so I need to include a big resistor.
so here is the current wiring diagram.

so my parts list so far is :
4 SPDT relays (ebay)
2 Schottky diodes part# STPS20L15D
2 8ohm 25watt resistor (ebay)

so heres the two wiring diagrams if anyone was interested. credit goes to user slinkmerc

based on these diagrams it looks like if the park lights are on, then there power to the side marker lamp as well as the front park lamp, and maybe even a bit to the front turn lamp. I cant tell where it grounds though. this looks like where my problem is. but i can't tell how the side markers signal, unless it supplies power to both sides of the lamp, canceling out the voltage

A liability consideration in any sort of accident involving a turn.

how so?

in general cars are required to have:
turnsignal facing front in amber or white - check.
turnsignal facing side - check
running light/headlight in front at night - check
running light/sidemarker at front side at night - check
now there are some minutae regarding height from ground, distance between headlight and turn signal, distance from which signals are visible, but those may vary from state to state.

So, how is my setup illegal?
and how is it more a liability any more than driving in the snow on summer tires?

you know what, ignore my last post.

I don't want to turn this into an pointless troll argument over legality or liability. The whole point of this thread is to solve an engineering problem (ie, how to get my fog lights to signal) and provide the info to the people who can decide for themselves.

I think if you hook it up right, it should be fine. Just make sure it's visible from far away, and it should be good. Cool idea though.

well, i think i have found my issue.
after studying the wiring diagram and using a volt meter. the red lines on the diagrams are 12V and the blue is ground.
WHen just the parking lights are on, the side marker ground has two paths, the generic electric module (GEM) and the signal bulb. After the side marker there is still 7.5V at 0.27amp in the wire and normally it isnt enough power to light the turn signal (a 27W bulb) but it is enough to trigger a relay. This is why i was having trouble getting things to light up. both relays in my original spec were switching


I cant simply just ground the bulb to chassis, because when the park lights aren't on, the power feeds the opposite direction to signal with that bulb as shown here.


And further, when the park is on and you want to signal, the GEM send 12V the opposite direction to the side marker and there is a 0 net voltage, interupting the side marker to signal


so, i need to include one more relay in the line just after the side marker to ground for park lights, but to feed 12 V in the other direction to signal.

I havent been able to test this yet, cuz i needed more relays, but stay tuned.

the side marker will remain.
im replacing the front grill with a Euro grill. so the original front turn is gone, and the front park light is gone.
