Unhappy Does anyone like this car/

Hi,
In January 2014, I bought a used Ruby Red Ford Focus Titanium Sedan. I love the way this car looks and I love the My Touch and Nav system. However, recently I began to hear a thumping noise under the driver's side footboard when backing slowly into a parking space. I did some research and found that Ford Focus' have a lot of transmission problems. So after shedding many tears (cuz I love my car), I'm wondering if I should trade her in for some other car that has less of a transmission problem history. Is the Ford Focus that bad of a car or are the complaints overblown?

I have not seen another car that has the perks that this car does. My husband bought a 2013 Hyundai Elantra at the same time. Its navigation system and stereo are totally inferior to ford's, but the transmission is solid.

I don't know what to do.

Make sure it's a real problem and many issues with the DCT can be resolved so don't fret prematurely.

It seems that there are quite a few people with transmission problems with the automatics. In some cases I have heard of dealers offering help and others saying its just normal break-in activity (which is BS). Apart from buying a focus with the 5 speed manual you roll the dice every time you buy a DCT on whether or not you will experience transmission shudders, there are a majority of focus owners though that have the automatic and have absolutely zero issues. Its important to keep in mind that they are not your conventional automatic transmissions with a torque converter, but rather an automated manual using dual clutches. This means that you need to drive the car more like a manual and be easy on the gas when starting or changing gears otherwise you will experience shudders and possibly further tranny problems. Hope this helped.

I'm fretting Ron. This was the first car I picked out myself that wasn't a hand-me-down. I don't want it to be a lemon. I love my car, but according to all my research, there are a lot of Focus Haters out there and some with good reason. I do have some of the "shuddering" from 0 to first gear, but not horrible. I think the shuddering is supposed to occur and people aren't used to this kind of transmission. Other than that, no problems...rollbacks.... slippage of gears as many have reported. I'm scared I guess.

Just be gentle on your car and as long as you are under dealer warranty don't be afraid to take it in and have them take a look at it if it starts acting up. Trying to find and diagnose future problems early is a great way to prevent them from becoming more serious problems. Odds are your focus is fine and there isn't anything to worry about. just try to keep a keen eye and snuff out any problems at the first sign.

Focus transmissions have been quirky the last few years. But most of the hating that you've encountered is probably about older vehicles, and our transmissions are completely different from yours.

Are you a ford dealer? I've been looking online at the Kia Forte, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic and Mazda 3. I don't see anything that compares with the dashboard in my Ford Focus. Damn, I love this car. Why did Ford have to put such a problematic transmission into it. I think a lot of people would have really loved this car except for the DCT. Too bad Ford doesn't wise up and just replace the transmissions. It may be costly in the beginning, but it would pay off in the end. Just Sayin'

Maybe you could look into learning how to drive a manual?

I'll let one of the other forum members answer that question.

now that hybrids have become mainstream and diesels are reentering the market, there is tremendous pressure on conventional compacts to hit the 40 mpg milestone. The DCT is one means of inching closer to that goal.

It think I'll take it into the dealer and let them see if 1) it needs to have any software updates, 2) if it needs any stealth reflashes and 3) have them check out the intermittent knocking under my floorboard.

I do love this car....Not sure why so much hostility towards it by reviewers, but I have seen a lot of good reviews too. I looked at pictures of the Kia Forte, Chevy Cruz, Nissan Sentra and others. No other car's navigation system and sound system looked as good as my Focus. Bleck.
