Ambient temp sensor has gone completely insane

Since I got the car a year ago, the temp sensor has been fine... accurate enough for me and I've been happy.

But last night it went nuts. The outside temp was about 40F. I noticed the cabin air getting colder, so I looked at the display. It said 108F and was climbing. It was up to about 130F or so and I shut off the car. When I started it back up, it said -40F, and started climbing again. Later that night, it said something like 156F.

So it seems very broken. Any idea where I might check to make sure it's plugged in correctly? I understand that the sensor is, I think, in the passenger mirror. Then where does the wire go?

Before I bring it back to the dealer, I figured I'd check to see if anyone else has had this issue and if there was a simple fix.

Thanks!

IIRC, I saw a thread that was dealing with heated mirrors, that wire bundle goes directly to the BCM under the passenger dash...

Any chance there was an invisible man holding a heating device up to the temperature sensor? Or perhaps Superman and his heat-vision?

Seriously, if it's under warranty just take it to the dealer. And next time take pics of the readout for proof, in-case it cannot be reproduced.

Hi Steve2012Focus,

Making an appointment at your dealership is a great next step. Additionally, I'm happy to get your case escalated to your regional customer service manager. To get the ball rolling, send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name. I'll take it from there!

Crystal

Obviously a bad sensor. You're car is too young to suffer menopause.

Question : are you operating your Focus on some distant planet? This may explain the weird temperature fluctuations. Hope this helps.

Definitely. We have a saying up here around Cleveland, "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes it'll change.
