I guess all the others I knew who called them same thing are wrong too. That's a lot of people, including one that worked at a fastener company. Lots of custom motorcycle guys.

They call them conical or tapered seats, I'll buy that, as that is what they are. They specifically caution against calling the seat 'acorn', as there are problems there, but we know that now don't we?

A link from Car Quest who, IMO, donest know shit about cars. Some regular old nuts that have nothing to do with automotive. And one car manufacturer who uses handyman terms.

As I said. WHEN REFERRING TO AUTOMOTIVE LUG NUTS, ACORN MEANS THE SEAT TYPE.

Don't want to admit you're wrong. Thats cool. You will never get it using handyman terms in automotive. Have a good one.

Lug nuts use "acorn" differently than all other fasteners.
Look at the Gorilla catalog, they give a breakdown of their terms, and even the open end tapered seat nuts they call acorns.

In the world of hotrodding that I grew up in, we just called those "tapered seat lug nuts" and acorn nuts are what you put on your flathead to make it pretty.

Hell, just for giggles I searched Summit Racing for "acorn" and you get both types, the closed end nuts for dress up and tapered seat lug nuts with open and closed ends.

This reminds me of trying to work with a British guy when he asked for a "spanner" which apparently just means any old wrench over there, not the specialty tool as that word is used here.

yeah, those say acorn CAP. we are talking acorn SEAT. two different ends. just got em today, they look EXACTLY the same. so it is acorn seated. but thanks. this discussion is over. i didn't think people would be getting so butthurt over it

I'm quite sure this discussion would have been much calmer if "False" hadn't been the starting line of the second response!

Most folks posting responses in the Tech sections of the forum are trying to be helpful, and I doubt that any of us individually has ALL the answers.

The initial caution given on "cap" vs. "seat" was useful as far as it went, and if the second response had simply expanded on that information with details on different types available no further "discussion" would have been likely.

Having twisted lug nuts myself since the biggest worry was determining whether you were dealing with left or right threaded ones, to avoid twisting off a stud by turning it the wrong way ( did it & learned), I can say that current usage has changed the terminology over time & that the current usage is more confusing than the original.

For a side note, AFAIK the Queen's English "Spanner" refers to an open end wrench that "spans" the flats of a fastener....

Freakin' troublemaker........................LOL. And spanner my foot. Still trying to figure out what I can use my S-curved Whitworth wrenches on............thinking Pop used them on a very old BSA.
