timing belt - rip off? help!

so my svt's in the shop getting the timing chain (84k miles) and i told the mechanic to call me when he hunts down a kit and give me a price. he did and the "complete timing chain kit will run you around $550 + labor - that includes the belt, pulleys, etc" he charges $60/hr

so anyways, i hang up on him and hop on FF to solve this bs. AND I FIND THIS

http://www.amazon.com/Gates-TCK294A-...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

this is the entire kit, correct? at $78 bucks!!! is this the right kit or is this mechanic trying to pull a fast one on me? I just dont understand, theres a HUGE difference $78 and $550.

help me asap :) he has my car and is waiting for my instructions.

Avoid that mechanic. You could probably piece together the parts you need on rockauto for cheaper than the kit.

Here's what I found:
$27.79 Timing Belt Tensioner- GATES Part # T43003
$16.82 Timing Belt Idler- GATES Part # T42034
$20.79 Timing Belt- GATES Part # T294
$65.40 Total

Make sure he has the timing tools... And make sure he knows how to do this. Even ford dealership techs/mechs have messed up a tb change for our svtf

Technically, the TCK294A isnt the correct kit for the SVT. You want the TCK294B. Our version of the zetec only has one idler pulley. I only bring this up to point out that he may screw things up with the idlers and install the smaller one or maybe try to install both and really mangle things ups.

SVT doesn't use a timing chain.

550 is quite steep if it's plus labor...

I'm also surprised he will install the kit, or if he does, I wouldn't expect a warranty on it.

I'd say it's obvious someone mistook the total cost for cost plus labor, or he misspoke ...

The actual gates kit is TCK294B. Not TCK294A.

$550 opp plus labor... Will he let you supply the parts? Like others have said you can get the gates kit + water pump and Ford timing tools for less than $175.

If he's not familiar with DOHC motors take it somewhere else unless you explicitly trust him.
