1700 miles too soon
I just purchased a 2013 ford focus se 5 speed and was wondering if its too soon to take it to the drag strip with only 1700 miles on it. I changed the oil and filter at 1100 miles to Mobil 1 full synthetic with a motorcraft filter. During the first 1000 miles the car was kept under 4k rpms and I attempted to vary rpms when possible. Obviously I don't expect to be breaking any new records but for $3 more I can race so I figure why not.

A drag race is extremely hard on a car engine/transmission/clutch.
And I hope you are aware racing is a warranty breaker. Yes even one run down a certified drag strip. Once an engine is well broken it it most likely will not harm the drivetrain. But at your miles you really are asking for trouble. When I had about your miles I took my car out to the local two lane twisties and ran it up and down the rpm staying in 3rd gear the whole time. So from running at 2,000 rpm up to clips of 6,000 on little straightaways.. It really was fun. keeping a light touch on the throttle was good for the engine.. Drag racing you are full throttle and really pressed to act fast, and generally disregard the well being of the drivetrain. Very hard shocks to the diff/gears.. I HAVE blown a differential drag racing and it is really a bummer to roll to a stop with red fluid pouring out the underside... (not in a Focus) Knowing it just cost a few thousand. |

I mean if you do it this way you could always by the ST version now since youll be in the market to buy another car.
But seriously way to soon and if you really want to drag it i would at least do a few suspension mods before you start launching your DD. |

I guess I'll hold off until 5-10k miles. I have no intentions of drag racing this car every weekend but would like to run it once as a baseline test.
