Hypermiling the 2012

Figured I should post my results since there is a complete lack of discussion on this topic with any REAL numbers people are seeing. Other posts just seem to talk about it and then someone comes in all pissy and bitching about people blocking traffic for going the speed LIMIT... please troll elsewhere.

INFO:
2012 SE automatic.
Regular gas
Commute of 35 miles, 31 miles being busy highway.
Bone stock

So for the first 4000 miles I just drove like normal (Boston normal) which is 70mph (which still pisses people off) max and I get stuck in enough stop-and-go that I would say 70% highway 30% city. I accelerated moderately, and coasted in drive when I saw brake lights ahead. This behavior gave me a reliable 36 in winter and 38 in summer. I noticed mpg would go up in traffic that was going 60 then slowing to 20 or 30 since I was coasting in gear.

Last 3-4weeks. I have started driving 55-60, sometimes 65. The speed limit is 55 and I stay in the right lanes. No drafting, light to moderate acceleration (shifts around 2200). No "pulse and glide" BS, which I think is dangerous around here. Too congested around Boston. I am averaging 46mpg. With my commute, every mpg is $100 savings/year that I can blow on gas for my Boss 302 and 90's Legos. Not to mention the savings on tires, engine wear and tear, and brake life. I did up the tire pressure to 45psi cold. When I was on the way home last week I looked down and the gas gauge was buried at E, but the car claimed I still had 60 miles to empty, lol.

Next to try: When I see traffic ahead I will hit the hill assist to bump the RPMs up and take advantage of the engine fuel cut-off while coasting feature.

So, what are the rest of you seeing (those who are actually trying).

Right now I'm alternating between coasting in neutral with the 5 speed and leaving it in gear to allow fuel shut off and still get engine braking. Working on finding the proper place for each, using fuel shut off on shorter distances and neutral coasting with steep/long running hills. No cars around of course. 1500 mile road trip at 67mph yielded 41mpg.

I did a commute up north a while back(1600 km), and now im going things up by using metric,. I get better fuel economy going 125-130 kmph then i do going 110. It baffled me for a bit and th en i clued in to the possibility that the higher rpms allow for the possibility of having more energy to keep the car moving. There's my tidbit, i thought it was interesting results from speeding. Oh and yeah i was getting 6.9 lp100km going 110kmph, and 5.8-6.1 going 126kmph average speed, maybe even 130kmph.

Moved to the Mk3 section since your not talking about performance just fuel economy

44.0 mpg this week. First time the outdoor temp has been low enough to keep the ac off; my ff is black.
145 mile round trip commute for work. 40 miles of it are rural. 20 miles of that is very hilly. The rest is freeway with almost no congestion.

Tire Air pressures @47
Plus fuel(on the 44mpg tank)
Ultragauge
No other mods

This is the first week with pressures up, ultragauge installed, ac off an entire tank. Previous best was a couple of tanks in the 38s.

I do not p&g. I do some minor drafting(stay behind trucks but back a comfortable distance). I will be installing a k&n filter this week. Full synthetic oil when due. I have owned the car for 6 weeks. 48k miles on the odometer.

My trip to work is 15 miles one way and about 12 highway. I tried hypermiling a few times and on one occasion I set the cruise at 55 mph (speed limit is 60) with the windows up and sunroof closed and a/c off and achieved 53.1 mpg

I can't figure out how to get better had mileage out of mine. I am averaging 31.5mpg right now. 48 mile commute round trip, 10 mile city, rest interstate with cruise set to 74. Moderate to light acceleration....can't see why I am not getting better

It's the 74. I notice a marked decrease in fuel economy going above 65 using my Scanguage.
