Advice needed: anything to look out for when buying a 05 Focus ZXW?

Hello --

First time poster. I hope I am posting this in the right place.

I don't actually own a Focus right now, but I have found a 05 Focus ZXW (wagon) SES for sale and am seriously considering purchasing it. It appears to be in good shape and the price is right. This wagon seems to hit a nice sweet spot of cargo space, MPG and drivability. 120k miles, auto trans.

Before I move forward, are the any mechanical, electrical, body, etc. issues that this model/year/series is prone to that I should be aware of? Things I should have the mechanic who will be evaluating this car concentrate on?

I've owned Hondas for most of my life -- this would be my first Ford. I do most minor work on my cars myself. I assume I'll need to trade my metric sockets for SAE?

Thanks very much for any input you can give me. If I do end up purchasing this wagon, I'll be around a lot!

to FF

The 05 has the Duratec motor which Ford still uses a variation of this motor in the new 2013 Foci. Overall, it is the best motor to have in these cars. I have heard of the tranny going out on these cars with the Duratec motors, might want to look into that.

The strut mounts and endlinks are also known to go bad in the first gen cars, you might have the first gen suspension in that gen 1.5 because sometime in the middle of 05 is when Ford changed the suspension.

Keep your metric tools, this is a European car

Brakes

A plus is the brakes are larger the 05 a sore spot on 00-04. You can look at April Consumer Report of past year for general reliability.

I just bought my first Focus not long ago. If you are getting it at a fair price and the vehicle seems to be well taken care of you should not have much to worry about. I have found these cars to be very simple to work on compared to other vehicles I have owned and the cost of parts seems to be fairly cheap for everything I have bought so far.

I am in the ATL area, after you get it if you ever want to meet up let me know. I am up for meeting other members and talking cars sometime.
