Is this MPG logic correct?
So I have two driving options to work each day and I have been trying to figure out which would be more benifital to take. The first is thru the city which is an 8 mile trip where I avg 30 MGP. The second is a trip on the Highway which is an 11 mile trip where I avg 39 MPG. My avg speed in the city is 40MPH and 55MPH in the highway. I also arrive 2 mins faster taking the highway.
Question 1: Is the follow logic correct? City 30MPG / 8 Miles Per Trip = 3.75 Trips Per Gallon Highway 39MPG / 11 Miles Per Trip = 3.5 Trips Per Gallon Question 2: Are there other reasons you would take the highway. Example: Stop and Go traffic more negatively affects your car. Discuss |

Best way to do it: Fill up with gas on Sunday. Drive the same route the entire week, or two. Fill up and record gallons used. Repeat, but take the other route. Be sure to use the same gas station, and try to make sure the weather was similar during all testing. Take the route with less gallons used. Doing it over a week or two helps average things out.
Or just take the route that you personally enjoy driving more. Or take the highway since you get there faster. Or take the highway since it should be a little easier on the car wear-wise. Or alternate routes so you don't get bored of either. Basically, its all up to you and will likely be close to wash in the end anyway.

You need to follow Swansong's advice because gallons used is a direct measure of your fuel consumption. Trips per gallon doesn't tell you anything unless all the trips you are comparing are the same distance.

Other things to consider.
Which one is more consistent? One may be better in the morning, worse at night. Day of week may matter too. You may find city is better on mornings (except monday), highway on evenings(except friday), and both suck on full moons......
