Rich exhaust smell in the cabin

I must have a leak somewhere. I have a rich, unburned, fuel/exhaust smell in the cabin of the car. Muffler and exhaust sound normal. Looking under the hood I can see a brownish haze coming up from the left hand side of the engine (as the driver views it.....right hand side as I see it with the hood lifted)

Head or manifold gasket?

2003. ZTS w/ 2.0. Dohc

If you don't hear an exhaust leak then I doubt your smelling exhaust gasses. Perhaps oil burning off the exhaust from a valve cover leak?

Does the smell get stronger with the heat or fan on?

That may be it. I can see an oily residue on the block. The smell is worse at low speed with only the interior vent fan on. I think the fumes build up under the hood at low speed and get sucked into the vent opening. The brown haze I'm seeing may be oil cooking off the block.

If the vent fan is on it gets stronger. With the heat or AC on I hardly notice it.

I had it checked out when I had the oil changed today. It is the valve cover gasket. It's inexpensive to fix and I'll have it done this week.
