Because I spent alot of seat time owning a car that went from 0-60 in a tad over 4 seconds and my Subi isn't far behind. Mid 15 second 1/4 miles aren't quick either when even a RAV4 can almost run down a ST in a drag race so "quick" is relative. If you compare it to other Fords with 4 bangers in them I guess it's quick.

20 years ago my bone stock Eclipse had 195hp and weighed in at 3300lbs and ran high 14s and even a stock turbo MR2 (200hp) was running 6.1 seconds to 60mph so my view of quick is biased.

I do think it's very cool Ford is offering an ST with the Fiesta since it has raised some eyebrows of some of my more jaded friends when they see the potential of a light turbo car.
One was considering the Abarth but if the ST does come in with an honest 197hp then he's not even looking at the 500 and this is from a guy who isn't keen on Fords or american cars in general.

Let's not start bench racing... But speaking of Eclipses...

I drove a 500+WHP Evo IX for two years. I know what "fast" is, generally speaking. The Fiesta ST will be a quick little car for daily driving...and it will be plenty for 99% of the time you're on the road.

Sure, having all that power on tap can be fun. But it's just not necessary. Was doing 0-60 under 3 seconds fun? You bet your ass. Is it the fastest I'll ever get there? Probably. But that hasn't skewed my perception of what a quick car is. Mid 6s in a ~20K family car is quick. You're saying the Civic SI, Cobalt SS/TC, Speed3, SRT4 - those aren't fast cars? Come on.

So sick of this notion that a car needs to rip your face off to be considered quick. We don't drive in the BTCC every day.

It'll be interesting to be see what the final curb weight and torque numbers will be on the US version. Horsepower doesn't mean a thing unless the torque is actually getting to the wheels. And neither mean squat if the engine is hauling a significant amount of weight, especially given all the electronics and safety equipment have cars have nowadays.

I'm hearing 197 hp, 177 ft/lbs at 1500 rpm, and 214 ft/lbs at 3500 rpm. Those numbers are with a temporary 20-second overboost function like the Focus ST uses. Curb weights are estimated at 2700 lbs.

Lot's of good info here:
http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_sh...ord_fiesta_st/

The more I read the more I love this car. I think I actually like it better than the Focus ST, since it's got more of a charismatic underdog character. We'll have to see how it really performs once it's released though.

That's why I said it was relative. Did you overlook I mentioned a RAV4 (14.7 in the 1/4) and other cars that put out 200hp and run quicker than a 15 flat 1/4 mile. All those cars (cept for the SI) you just mentioned are all alot quicker (even quicker than my stock DSM) than the Fiesta ST and run 14 second 1/4 miles which IMO is starting to get quick for a daily driven street car. Even the SVT Focus was quicker and over 10 years old now.

It is fast for it's class and even quicker than some outside of it's direct competition but quick is in the eye of the beholder.

The ST is still cool and an awesome starting point for somebody who wants to build a bit of a sleeper and whoop on cars unexpectedly.

A new V6 Camry will outperform the Focus ST in the quarter mile. A lot of vehicles these days have impressive engines and straight line performance, but they are not necessarily as lively or entertaining to get to speed as the Fiesta ST should/will be.

And of course it should be an absolute hoot to chuck around corners. Hot hatches are all about maximizing smiles-per-dollar, with practicality to boot. They may not be the quickest in the quarter or around a track, but the fun factor is often hard to match.

Quicker than what? SVTs are slow: 0-60 in 7.7ish and quarter mile in 15.9ish.
