5th gear swap out need some help ! 2013 se 5spd
Anyone have source info on where to buy Tranny parts ?
? Why, I am going to change 5th gear in my SE. 3200rpm at 70 is horrible. I travel daily 100 miles round trip, most of the time at 65 mph plus. 31 mpg is a joke. If I recall correctly 5th gear ratio is some where in the .8 it needs to be low .7 IMHO .. Shame on me for not doing better research before this purchase Edit found it ! Standard Five-speed manual Gear ratios First 3.67 Second 2.14 Third 1.45 Fourth 1.03 Fifth .81 Optional PowerShift six-speed automatic Gear ratios First 3.917 Second 2.429 Third 1.436 Fourth 1.021 Fifth 0.867 Sixth 0.702 Reverse 3.507 Fourth 1.03 Fifth 0.81 |

So your wanting to swap out your manual with the automatic? I am 99% sure you cant just swap out the gears. Auto and Manual transmission work very differently.
31 MPG is not bad... did you not read the sticker on the car to see what the freeway MPG is? I think its around 36 on your vehicle (With Auto)... not sure how that changes with the use of the manual. You will be better off using cruse control more often, driving during non peak travel times, get skinny tires, and make sure you have correct tire pressure. Edit: putting your information in you should be more at a 2600 RPM @ 65 MPH in 5th gear. and changing out to a lower gear would put you at 2350 RPM. I am not sure if a change of 250 RPM's is going to give you the expected MPG improvement you may want.

beware,I wouldn't do anything that's going to throw the warranty out on the whole drivetrain especially with the track record the MK3s have been having.

Highway 36 for the manual, sticker is in front of me. The sticker on the Auto is 38 highway
No I am not going to try and swap out the gears from a auto box. I am trying to source a .7 ish gear for a swap, I guess I was not clear in my request. Warranty ... 31mpg at 65mph for 30 miles CC on ! I was just happy to see the display read over 30 mpg for the first time this morning. Quote:

Winter gas IIRC usually also has a slight decrees in fuel economy due to additives to keep it from freezing. You also may have the defroster on, or snow or other items on your car that increases drag?
You will be spending $$$ on a gear... they made a different gear for the MTX-75 transmission but was a higher final drive of a 4.06 gear. I looked at one time offsetting that with a lower 5th gear but it was going to be all custom. and gears are a costly manufacture for a 1 off deal. There is the little * next to the expected MPG right? Have you checked the tire pressure lately?

Why not swap to a 6speed from a Mazdaspeed3. Cobb mated it up in the SEMA Focus. The link below is the ST transmission specs.

I live in central California, the low temps in the am are Norm above 40f. Single gears cost in the 400-500 range. I am assuming here but I bet the euro version have a better gear ratio.
MY focus has less than 500 miles on it. All tires are at spec checked last night when cold. For the record I am a former vwTDI gear head. 47mpg with a tune, I know this is not a TDI nor will I get near the mileage. Quote:

Is it typical to see lower fuel economy on the first few hundred miles or so because of engine brake in?
Also (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...WD&srchtyp=ymm) shows that 29 is about average. so gear $400-$500 + a few hundred to install. so your at $700 to get the gear and installed. to increase you to perhaps 35-36 MPG? vs 30MPG , 6 MPG difference. @ $4.00 a gallon you would need 175 gallons of fuel saved before you brake even. A difference of 6 miles per gallon you would need to travel approx 31,500 miles before even braking even. People have seen a difference of about 200-300 RPMS when swapped to the 4.06 gears so you are likely to see less than the 6 MPG difference with a change from .82 to .7. which will take longer to brake even. If you drive that much and will have the car that long then go for it~!

My wife drove my 2012 SE w/5-spd once at 65 mph and the tank ended up being nearly 40 mpg. Also, imho, the gearing is where one wants it to be with the power this engine makes. Also you don't just change one gear. If you want to drop the rpm you make a final gear ratio change. The mtx-75 had at least 3 gear ratios. The only time I have heard of people changing the gear ratio are Contour owners with 3l engine swaps and often forced induction. IIRC going from the 4.06 in the Contour to the Focus/Zetec ratio of 3.8 dropped about 500 rpm.
