two lighting questions (Wiring)

2006/2007 Ford Focus 4 door.

1: I want to add aftermarket fog lamps, and omit the turn off with brights feature. (I want them on unless I push the knob in to turn them off)
I know they run thru a relay under the hood in the compartment, what do I need to jump to go around it?


2: What is the wiring for the overhead map/door lights?
There are two plugs, one with 2 wires, one with 1 single.
I want to splice in some small LED strips for around the overhead console
and just need to know where my hot and ground is up there.

The orange single wire is constant power. It has power even when the key is removed from the car.

The two black wires are the grounds. One is a constant ground allowing you to turn on the dome light whenever you'd like. The other ground is managed by the door ajar system; when a door is opened, it connect the ground which activates the dome light. I don't remember which ground is which but a tester or trial and error will find them.

Moved to Ford Focus Mk1 discussions. Yeah, it seems like this is all interior mods, but it's supposed to be body mods too. General Technical Chat is for technical discussions relating to general maintenance, electrical issues, engine trouble, and recalls. In other words, fixing problems. Thanks for posting!

FYI: I personally don't like the methods mentioned here for bypassing the relay because I don't like putting things under a relay. Another more difficult method is to identify that relay socket, turn the fuse box over, and tie those 2 wires together with a "suitcase" electrical connector designed for putting 2 wires together. Remember, your brights rely on this relay as well, so if it were to become loose, you'd have no brights.

I have no problem with bypassing the relay's function because- in this case- the fog lights are basically switched by the light switch not the relay. What you have is a normally open and normally closed combination relay- 6 pins, 2 small pins, and 4 large pins. If you flip the relay over, you'll see small numbers beside each pin. those correspond to the relay diagram on the side of the relay. The NO pins are for the brights. The NC pins are for the fogs. That's why you can't have both at the same time. In the case of the brights, the toggle switch switches the relay coils- not the power of the brights. In the case of the low power fogs, the switch itself is sufficient.

Do what you want, many people have done it like described, and I know of no problems. As a 20+ year veteran of electrical work, I just can't recommend doing it like that.
