Tv's

what does everyone run for a tv for gaming? and from personal experience what set up works the best. for example i have a 42" vizio, that has 120hz, 3 hmdi outputs and it has options on it to make it have smooth motion and other options. but it seems to lag some. i have good internet connection and the best routers, but it seems the frames per second are slow. so what works for others and what doesnt?

We have a Sony 46" LCD with the 120hz refresh rate and I notice little to no lag but when we bumped up to a 55" LED we went with a 240hz to make sure we didn't have that issue.

so the higher the hertz the faster the fresh rate? that makes sense. but why does it seem like its still behind when gaming and so smooth with (blueray) movies?

These "refresh rates" really mean nothing for gaming, and have nothing to do with lag. 120hz and 240hz are software tricks that the TV does to reduce motion blur. The TV takes a 60hz signal and creates false frames between the real frames to give the perception that there is no blur. It is basically a gimmick.

There is no such thing as a 120hz signal. Everything that is NTSC is 60hz. It is a standard.

Lag on an HDTV is caused by post processing that a TV does with the signal it's getting. So, the amount of time it takes the TV to work on the image is what is causing the delay between your controller and the screen. The "game mode" on most TVs turns this processing off, and lets the raw signal hit the screen.

Not trying to hate on your TV, just saying.

sgtsmasher, look in your settings for a Game Mode, this will eliminate controller lag.

Hater

Yes,you geeked me but I haven't noticed any lag on either TV but wouldn't have to do more with your internet when on-line gaming.

I don't have any issues with mine, I have a 65" LCD. The only game I've noticed any lag on was during GTA4. Everything else works fine.

I have a 46" LED 120hz tv I bought on Newegg after Thanksgiving. It works great for my Xbox and AppleTV

Now I'm just waiting for a good receiver to go on sale so I can use the Polk speakers I bought on sale hahaha

^^^Nice R300's, I'm guessing you got them on the $79.99 sale?

There are different types of lag, there is controller lag which is where there is a delay between you hitting buttons or moving a thumbstick and the effect showing up on screen. This is what I was talking about above and can be fixed by turning on Game Mode.

Online lag can be cause by bad ping, slow Internet, crappy router. Sometimes it's caused by bad net-coding in the game itself. You can usually reduce lag by connecting to a server closer to you. Some games let you pick a specific server to join, other will at least let you choose the region you're in. Basically, if you live on the East Coast, you don't want to be on a server in the West. And you definitely don't want to be on a server in Europe.

That's a hell of a deal. Newegg is awesome. I got my center channel from them on sale and it was a steal.
