Normally when I fill up my tank, I turn the car off but leave the battery on so that I can reset the average mpg, trip time, etc. When I do this, the distance to empty rises until the tank is completely full. Yesterday I filled the car up but completely turned it off, no screens/did not reset anything. When I turned the car back on, the Distance to empty stayed at the miles it was prior to filling up (50mi). The tank gauge rose to full, but the screen still reads the mileage from before I filled the tank. This morning when I turned the car on, it still said 50mi and even dropped a mile during my commute to work. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to fix it?

Notice I don't know 100% what to do with a 3rd gen
but if there isn't a reset button I would start with this. 1. remove negative lead for about 20mins and replace 2. Turn ignition to to first position and leave for 5 mins 3. start car and let idle for 5 mins 4. restart car and go for a drive. |

Take it to the dealer to get it fixed. It has a warranty and it should function as designed

Welcome to the forum, jenmalino!
I see theres already been some good suggestions posted. As a bonus, the following is from page 360 of the 2012MY Focus Owner Guide 5th Printing: The amount of usable fuel in the empty reserve varies and should not be relied upon to increase driving range. When refueling your vehicle after the fuel gauge indicates empty, you might not be able to refuel the full amount of the advertised capacity of the fuel tank due to the empty reserve still present in the tank. For consistent results when filling the fuel tank: Turn the engine/ignition switch off prior to refueling, an error in the reading will result if the engine is left running. Use the same filling rate setting (low medium high) each time the tank is filled. Allow no more than two automatic click-offs when filling. Always use fuel with the recommended octane rating. Use a known quality gasoline, preferably a national brand. Have the vehicle loading and distribution the same every time. Your results will be most accurate if your filling method is consistent.
