Brakes/gas cap issue

2005 Ford Focus Zx4
102,000 miles

Ok so my girlfriend has owned this car for 1 year, put 22k on it. Before she moved in with me, the car was not taken care of very well. Had ONE oil change since she owned it

So did a oil change, spark plugs and coil on boots. (I'm not very familiar with Fords, but does this have a air filter?) Or is it one of those N/S ones.

So I am trying to get it ready for inspection, I am doing the brake shoes tomorrow, people have told me they are a PITA on this car. Is there anything I can look out for?

And lastly, the check gas cap is on. I work at a parts store, so put a new cap on and light is still there. Are there any issues with after market caps? Would trying a ford one be worth a shot? Or do I need to start inspection EVAP lines

TIA

Welcome, xFocusingx. Yes, the air filter is a non-serviceable, 100K mile sealed filter. I have read that they are wicked expensive to replace. As you know, there are plenty aftermarket A/F to choose from. I have a used Steeda SRI for sale, if you are interested.
Sorry, I haven't had experience with drum brakes for 20 years, so I don't know about shoes for those. Try the search function here, or on FJ. As for the gas cap, after replacing it, did you try disconnecting the battery (+/- 10 minutes), or did you try to reset the gas cap light with an OBD II scanner? It often takes several drive cycles to reset under normal conditions. It is possible a new one wasn't necessary, if the cap was just not replaced properly after refilling the gas tank. Good luck.

So did the brake shoes, ended up having to replace both drums, and all the hardware. Everything was pretty rusty (car was in VT whole life) and one of the bearings just broke into pieces :o Was actually pretty easy, hardest thing to do was get the wheels offs.

Is there a way to just reset the gas cap light? Could not find a way online. the check engine light is not on, so nothing to clear. Do I just need to disconnect the battery and see if that works? I did reset it with a OBD II scanner when I did the plugs a couple weeks ago

One thing that worries me, is when I open the car to get in the car, before the car even turns on or key is in ignition, the light is already on. I dont want it to possibily drain the battery
