2012 Ti MPG Rating (new car)

Hello Ladies and Gents!

I am a new member but I have been lurking since I bought my new Focus. I was shocked at all of the problems that people have been having! So far so good for me ... (only 1250 Miles)

The only problem I really have (which I have wanted to be fixed since the beginning) is the rated MPGs versus the MPGs which are reported by my display. I average around 24 with city driving. I have even tried to switch to Granny style driving (taking around 15-20 seconds to get up to 45 MPH) and I still yield apx. the same results.

I am wondering what you guys seem to average for mostly city driving. I never really hit the highway on my way to work or otherwise.

Also, do the MPG ever get better once the car gets "broken in". I called my dealership and they said that I should give it some time so that the car can break in.

Let me know what you guys think. I love the forums so far.

Your MPG is pretty common. Some get good, some bad.
One huge point IMO is what sort of city driving is being done.
Rush hour, lots of stoplights: Gets really bad mpgs.
If you reset the mpg dash meter. you can SEE the mpgs drop like a stone while sittingat a red light.
I usally get 35 Summer city, now Winter gas, 33mpg. BUT: I never have to drive in heavy traffic in city. And always use streets with almost no stoplights.
When I have to go into parts of town with lots of traffic and lights.. My MPG drops fast....
So.. even though you drive slow or fast... the number of times per mile you have to come to a stop, and accelerate ... matters the most.

We have 7k miles and our milages is going down. Just had serviced. We gt 25 mpg with a 8 mile highway an >1 mile easy town driving. Also told break in time is needed.

Yeah this car is very inconsistent across a great many things. My MPG avg sits around 29-30 normally, that's about 70% city.

But, even on 90% highway trips, my BEST ever has been 34mpg, seen it once, never again, 31-32mpg if I'm lucky.

Then again... some parts of the country, highway speed limits are 55, here in FL it's 70, over 55 mpgs start dropping pretty steadily.

I am averaging 36 in 90% highway driving done at a strict 60 MPH on rolling terrain. Some 37.5 tanks. City alone appears to be around 25, although I've never done a full tank of just city driving. 17 inch wheels, DCT.

I average 29 in mixed city/highway commute. Can get 37 on the highway going a steady 65-70. Usually go a bit faster than that and highway mileage drops to about 32.

I have the 2012 Ti HB and my average for just under 15,000 miles is over 37mpg. I've had several tanks over 44mpg when driving a consistently lower speeds without a lot of stop-and-go. Now that I've had a number of tanks during the winter the mileage is dropping, but that's to be expected in the winter.

As others have mentioned the real killer for mpg is stop-and-go driving as you might encounter during rush hour city driving or, perhaps, stop-and-go driving on interstate highways during rush hour. There is a stretch of road that's technically city driving but if I can avoid hitting many stops I can average over 40mpg on it, but, if there's a bunch of stops as is likely during rush hour the mileage can drop down towards 20mpg. Stop-and-go can litterally make a 2x difference in mpg.

When you can cruise on the highway without stopping the mileage really increases and may follow something like this:

80mph = 30mpg
75mph = 32mpg
70mph = 34mpg
65mph = 36mpg
60mph = 39mpg
55mph = 41mpg
50mph = 43mpg
45mph = 46mpg

Nice summary. I agree - very similar to my car.
