The DCT is essentially a sequential shift transmission, at least when slid into manual mode.

I have to disagree. The Dart was no better, and I prefer the 6DCT or the 6MT from the ST over the 5MT. The 5MT had basically the same gear ratios as my old car. The clutch felt ok, but I'm so over having an engine spinning over 3000 just to do 70 mph for a daily driver.

For some of the same reasons that you would shift a manual transmission.

Automatic mode works fine for most driving circumstances but not all.

Regarding perfromance in a straight line and around a track I'd bet the 5spd is quicker than the DCT which is sucking up more HP to do it's job.

How is the DCT sucking up that much more horsepower though as it has a pair of dry friction clutches instead of a torque converter. It was the torque converter which saps more power than a dry friction clutch.

On paper the DCT is quicker (6 speeds and shorter gearing).

Where exactly is the power loss in the DCT relative to the 5 speed?

Obviously you haven't driven the MTX. I drove both when I bought mine and the DCT is a dog in comparison. The manual makes these cars soooo much more fun to drive. Plus the MTX-75 has been used for a while by Ford and is a solid piece. There's no comparison IMO

I've driven both, and the DCT had the edge on refinement and with the 6th gear ratio the edge on bringing the engine speed down on the freeway. Instead of 70 mph at 3000 rpm, its down to 2600 rpm or so.

The manual was nice, but unfortunately it only has 5 gear ratios and its top gear closely matched that of my last car from 1994 which meant that because it weighed over 500 lbs more it wasn't going to feel faster even with an extra 55 horse power, and the added weight was going to hurt in town fuel economy compared to the old car.

If they had put a 6 speed with a taller overdrive ratio like the DCT, or the Cruze Eco's 0.62:1 6th gear for highway cruising.

I don't mind rowing through the gears, but they also wouldn't put the manual in a car equipped the way I wanted it in 2012 so there was that also.
