Brake light out, will not start

I just read a person's complaint(on Complaints.com) regarding a 2010 Focus that claims because of a rear brake bulb failure, his car would not start. The guy claims that Ford has the 2010 Focus wired as such because of safety issues. I find this hard to believe and have not seen anything pertaining to this on the FF site. Anyone else heard of this?

Pretty sure that 2010 focus owner is confused, not mechanically or electrically inclined, and generally bad at attribution theory.

Easy to test. Take out a rear brake light bulb; then see if the car starts.

Ha! That is what I thought as well. It was so "out there" I had to get it on FF. However, I must admit the older I get nothing surprises me any more!

You know, I thought about doin' just what you posted. Then I thought, how damn stupid this was. I didn't want Bill Engvall showing up telling me "here's your sign!"

It could have been that the original OP may have worded his complaint wrong. If is an ATX, it will not go out of park if the brake lights are out.

You sure about that?

The transmission doesn't know what is happening with the lightbulbs.

If the brake stop lamp switch is bad, you can't shift out of park. (unless you manually depress the plunger on the shifter for a manual over ride)

and if the brake lights don't work and it won't shift out of park... better check that switch!

I had an 09 that had a burned out tail lamp bulb once. Everything worked perfectly.

So... it didn't result in a black hole then? That's comforting.
