2013 TiHB Steering not working

I went out this morning (19) and jumped in an already warmed Focus hoping to drive away when I put it in reverse to back out and the steering was rock hard.

I'm taking it in to the dealer and I only have 25,800 miles hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I will update this post when I find out what is wrong.

I know you already have it at the dealer but did you check the fuse for the EPAS yet?

I don't have it at the dealer yet but I was thinking about checking the fuse. I came home later today and the steering worked. Then tonight I checked again and it is not working, so it is sporadic.... Going to the dealer tomorrow morning. (only reason it's not there now because service is closed and I didn't want a non-steering vehicle in their parking lot)

It could be a corroded fuse but, if it's intermittent, then it's probably an issue that needs dealer attention. If the fuse had blown, it would not work until the fuse was replaced.

*update* 12/13

As of Wednesday the dealership has ordered a steering rack for my car. It is supposed to be in today(Friday) but may not arrive til tomorrow. Needless to say I have been driving a loaner(2010 Ford Fusion V6) for almost a week. It has tons of power(comparatively).

I had the dealership call me this morning with the news it may not be done til Monday. So with the early morning drop-off Monday 12/9 and the Monday estimate of 12/16 this will be a one-week repair.

I don't fault the dealership at all for the timing and hope all will be well as soon as the new 'rack' is installed. Ford could have huge problems with this issue if I can't steer and I end up under a truck on I-5..

*UPDATE* 12/13 evening

Thanks.

Well, it was about 6pm when I got the call my car was done...

I asked what happened when I got there and they couldn't diagnose the issue but it did replicate after their initial road test. So basically it was $4500 worth of work covered completely by Ford, thank God for the maintenance package.

Moved to MK3 TSB, Recall & Problems Archive.

Glad that you were able to get it replaced under warranty. I've heard of quite a few steering racks getting replaced due to excessive wander at highway speeds, but this is the first time that I can remember of it not working altogether...
