2.5 ?

Will a 2.5L I4 from any Ford bolt into a Focus mtx, what years? Use 2.5 computer with swap? Looking for cheap torque increase with good fuel economy/driveability for a DD. Car is under powered for medium elevation (4,000+feet) use in strong headwinds.

Cheap and engine swap don't belong in the same sentence.

I know what you mean, I've had mine over 12,000ft with 4 people in it.

True story...just got done putting a 454 in an 83 camaro. Then I thought it would be fun to wire up a fuel injection system that I took from a truck...My point is it wont be cheap lol

2.5 engine

I started a discussion on this a few months back. If you do a (2003-2011) search on "2.5 engine" the discussions will come up.

I dropped the idea for my car when an irresistible deal on a low mileage 2.0 "drop-in" engine came up.

Physically the engine swap looks pretty easy but the electronic issues are another story. The 2.5L Duratec has VVT (variable valve timing) and DBW (drive by wire). Both of these are significant engine strategy issues and your processor cannot handle either. The 2008 to 2011 Focus has DBW but not VVT.
Also, the computer pin-outs on the 2008+ computer are very different from yours.

Trying to adapt an engine compatible computer would be a challenge that requires somebody with harness pin-outs and some real experience. One incorrect pin-out can smoke your whole harness and or the processor.

I had looked at trying to trick the engine into thinking it was 2.0D by using a non DBW throttle body and mechanically locking he cams at a compromise position. The 2005-2007 will run OK without a cam sensor but the MIL light will be on constantly. Another issue is that your MAF sensor would not be able to handle the airflow needed for the 2.5 to provide full power-but maybe enough for what you want.

I know Turbo Tom has been working on this swap and I trust what he has to say.

I do agree that if the issues could be economically resolved this would be a perfect swap for those of us that want more low/mid range power but don't want to give up driveability.

The post started by VillageT really addresses the issues. This swap doesn't appear to be cheap nor for the less than highly skilled.

Just turbo it? Or put 2.3 in it. My 2.3 with bolt ons is lot quicker than my 2.5 fusion

Yeah I think turbos would be good, any engine will choke at high elevation... I don't think going 500cc more will be a very dramatic difference... nothing like a turbo would anyway... after all, a turbo is really only simulating higher atmospheric pressure
