No, you don't need to remove the cam/valve cover to remove the solenoid. Is there supposed to be a gasket under the solenoid itself? When I took mine off to clean it, there was no sign of a gasket. I ordered one from Tousley, $226 I think, but I didn't ask for a gasket for it.

Oh, we couldn't remove the VCT without taking off the valve cover. Solenoid wouldn't just "pull through" the hole.

Sorry to highjack the thread a bit, will a bad solenoid always throw a code?

Before it sat for months, it would turn on. I could hear it along with a very noticeable bump in power. Now it doesn't seem to have the sound or power anymore. I have some check engine codes I need to get on, I think at one point the code pertained to the intake manifold runners.

in response to the guy that ohmed out his vct solenoid and found 10 ohms. I believe the factory spec is between 3 to 6 ohms. my car keeps throwing a p1383 code. i checked the cams and they r correctly timed. i checked the wire wiring to the vct and followed the trouble shooting and it says to replace the solenoid. my solenoid also ohmed out at 10 ohms. My question is could anyone ohm out a known good vct sensor and post the findings? just wanted to know before i shelled out the big bucks for a new solenoid. thanks for the help
