I replaced a timing belt after letting a 2000 ZTEC sit for four months (belt had broke). After replacing the belt, it only ran for a bit. Compression is still fine, engine sounds fine when it's running. Chased it down to a lack of fuel. Checked fuse, inertia switch, checked fuel tank level, etc. but there is no fuel pump "hum" with ignition turned on. It sat for a couple weeks until I could get to it again. Checked the module under the seat, it had power to it on one of the pins (9) but not 7 & 10 as the manual indicated it should have. Put the connector back in and checked the relay (in the dist. box under the hood). Relay was clicking fine and I heard the fuel pump hum with about the 3rd key on. It started and ran long enough for me to pull the rear jack stands out, get out of the driveway but it stalled backing out and wouldn't restart. No more fuel pump hum after many tries.
Car has lots of miles but is in good condition. It seemed to possibly not be running so well but that could have been lack of fuel pressure? I couldn't really get it up to speed.
What's your thoughts? Time to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump or could it be something else worth checking? My only thought was that it could be "before the pump" electrical but it looks like you can't pull the pump connector without dropping the tank, is that correct?
