Focus 2003 Gauge cluster - Stop and reset

Hi,

When I'm driving my 2003 Ford Focus, sometimes the gauge cluster stop for like 2 seconds and then, all the gauges pointers go to the maximum and it comes back to normal. In 30 minutes, it did that to me 4 times.

Does anyone of you know how to fix that problem?

Thanks

You should check your alternator output. We sometimes get this when the voltage regulator fails. Try the electronic odometer trick: key OFF, press and hold trip odometer reset button, turn key to ON (not ACC), continue to hold reset button until odometer reads [test]. Now each time you press and release the odo reset button you will scroll through one of 30 test functions until the key is turned OFF again. You are looking for the test function that reads [bat 12.1] or whatever your battery voltage is. Now start the engine without turning the key to OFF, and the odometer will show the alternator voltage. If that voltage is above 14.9V at any point, then you have a bad voltage regulator, and you will need a new alternator.

The other option is that the instrument cluster connector is loose. This one is less dangerous to anything. It could also be that the cluster itself is bad, but I'd bet on one of these 2 first.
