2006 Focus CEL came on 1 week after power steering pump replaced

Hi all, I've been looking around at what might cause the check engine light to come on but most situations are pretty specific to each user. We have a 2006 Focus that had it's power steering pump replaced last week, and an oil change a few days before that. It's been running great since. Then the check engine light came on this morning. I saw on some posts something about pulling codes if you hold down the odo button when starting the car.. is this legit?

It's "legit", but it gives you a numeric code that still needs to be interpreted.

Prob. easier to go to a parts store that offers free code reading, many do these days. then you get a description of the 'code", not just it's number....
