Recall on Moonroof for 2012?

Good evening all. I'm wondering if any of you have heard about a potential recall on the moonroof for the 2012 Ford Focus? Today, while driving home from work, this happened:

I will be taking it to the dealership on Thursday, but I thought I would get onto some forums and see if anyone has heard of this happening or has had this happen to them.

I pulled over, looked around, checked the rest of my car, but I don't see any other damage, and I didn't see anything that could have caused this to happen. There isn't any damage to the plastic slider portion of the moonroof. Just the glass seems damaged (although not sure on the mechanical part of it).

There are stories and evidence of tempered glass that spontaneously explodes when heated - from a source such as the sun or an oven. Glass used in cookware and patio furniture are the prime examples.

Even windshields have been known to explode when heated in the desert sun and then exposed to the cold water of a car wash.

Defects in the glass/tempering - but you sure have a first of many on the 2012 there....

It will be interesting to see what a search brings on this one.

Thank you for the replies!

Unfortunately, my email wasn't telling me about these replies, so I've missed a few.

PM'd FordCustomerService, and I really appreciate the reply.

I took my car to the dealer yesterday and was told after about 2 minutes of them looking at it, that the warranty will not cover glass damage, which is very frustrating to hear.

However, I have seen this post:

http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/dir...ew/.f1291fc/73

Posts 75 and 77 by mylilmule regarding the 2012 Ford Focus. Per this poster, Ford is covering it under warranty as the manufacturer of the glass is not making any for service, only production.

I'm really hoping all of this gets cleared up soon, and I'm looking forward to hearing from Customer Service regarding this issue.

Sunroof Explodes Without Warning
Expert Says It's More Common Than You Think
Theresa Marchetta, 7NEWS Anchor
POSTED: 2:39 pm MDT May 18, 2010

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...62/detail.html

From the story:

Call7 Investigator Theresa Marchetta went back to class at the Colorado School of Mines to get answers. ( School of Mines is a prestigious engineering school).

We're using more and more glass. We need it to be stronger and unfortunately when you make glass stronger it also has this tendency to explode. Its part of the territory, said Mines chemistry professor Mark Eberhart.

What makes glass strong, he said, we've put the surface of the glass under a great deal of compression. That means we are pushing on it. We put the inside of the glass in tension so the inside of the glass is pulling the outside together. That makes a very strong glass."

(This means the glass is tempered).

"Make sure any auto glass is mounted with a little space between it and the steel or aluminum frame that holds it to allow the glass to expand when your car heats up."

So, with glass all around, should we worry? Eberhart says no.

I don't think it's something you should worry about. Its probably less likely you'll be injured by that than being hit by lightning, he said.

(It doesn't happen often but if it happens once to you I'm sure it's once too often. You really want to read the full story for additional insight).

Angry 2012 focus SEL

My moonroof did the same thing last Friday. Took my to 2 dealers and called Ford Service. Got same reply from all of them. "Glass is NOT covered under warranty" Ford WILL NOT replace the glass for any reason. Looks like my insurance and I have to pay for Fords cost savings.

I remember on time my mother had taken her dog for a walk at a local park. Her Volvo was parked in the lot in the sun. When she came back to the car about an hour later her rear window had exploded outward.

My Sunroof Exploded Today

I had my 2012 Focus sunroof explode today. I was driving across a bridge and BANG something happened to cause it to explode. It exploded outwards so it's not like a rock hit it. There were no vehicles around...thankfully. When I was able to stop there was a lot of glass missing from the sunroof. I took it to a Ford dealer right away and they took pictures and sent them off to Ford Canada to see if they would warranty it and of course the answer came back a couple hours later as NO they wouldn't. Now I'm on a path to try and contact them again and again to get them to warranty this. Especially since this is common not "rare" as they have told some of you.

If anyone has anything that can help me let me know as I'll take all advice/comments.
