after problems with shipping rod bearings i finally got them in and the engine is built and assembled. got to mod the windage tray for arp studs to clear and tap oil pan and it will be going back in the car

Thats one way to say it, but when you have reached the safe limits of pump gas you cant just keep adding boost to get power. i picked up 88whp with cams and ported head on c16 picked up 48whp on pump. same boost same weather conditions same dyno. so to say its not worth it is kinda stupid.

48 hp from ported head and cams ? thats what 3 to 3.5 psi more boost with your turbo

Ported head and cams cost 1500.00 roughly ?

What HP was this at that you saw 48hp gain from ported heads and cams ? Im guessing in excess of 350 to 400

Not even close to 1500.00. I had 250 in cams, port work was free, but to normal ppl like Mike (rudel) its 400 for porting. went from 390 something to 440 something on pump, I have the dyno graph on my old computer. or you can go look thru the 50 billion pages of my old thread and I posted the results there, side by comparison. and of coarse it was at that power level I never dynoed it at lower boost to be able to get a comparison. it would yield great gains at lower boost too, it had a much better curve.

wich cams did you u se jim? and did you use oversized valves?

i agree with both on the issue. if you are running at the very limit and have run out of turbo you can do port and cams and see good gains and not have to switch to a larger turbo. but if you are only running 12 psi then i dont think it worth it b/c the extra power can be had by running 14 or 15 psi...

i think chase will get his 450 with a s256 and stock head/cam. if he doesnt then he can do a head and cam swap then. the s256 is a 4.0pr turbo so he should be able to run 40psi with out going pass efficiency unless the smaller exhaust housing holds it back.

Tim that was the point I was going to make , less then 400-450 HP it wouldnt be worth adding ported head , cams even if the cost was 900.00 , Not everyone is like you Jim where they can do the work them self , 90% of the people here would have to buy cams not used and new your at 350-370 and pay for a ported head , valve job , seals etc 800-1200.00 and why I said 1500.00

Yea i wasnt commenting about focusmaniac build, i was just commenting on what he said about how you can just turn up the boost to overcome a none ported head. that is not the case all the time.
