Another question: Is there anything I can do about how easily the front tires cut loose when I try any kind of quick start off the line? In the rain, they cut lose like crazy even on normal application of power/clutch. Does everyone have this problem. It seems like there might just be too little weight in the front. Other than getting "sticky" tires, any advice???

What kind of tires are on the car?

I will move this to a better section.

Common thing, unfortunately. I just let the car go on its own a little, then I give it some extra gas once it has a grip.

Well having the motor in the front of the car on a front wheel drive car usually doesnt make the car too light in the front, almost always the opposite.

You shouldnt be breaking free on normal application of clutch/power unless your tires are worn out. What tires do you have on the car now, how much tread is left on them, properly inflated?

Some tires are made for long life & high mileage, the down side is that they don't stick much at all....

Noting where you live, one other thing to mention is that it's REAL slippery from dust & oil on the road when it first starts raining after a dry spell, takes quite a while for the crud to get washed off the road. More noticeable with a FWD car....

How much maintenance has your car gotten in the past 11+ years?

Blown dampers, bad motor mounts, siezed bushings, etc, etc can all lead to excessive wheel hop.

I would say this is pretty common when trying to take off quick, especially if it's raining and you don't have a "sticky" tire. I drive an '08 Passat 3.6 wagon and when I punch it, all the weight of the hatch part of the car just makes the back end squat, in a sence "lifting" the front end and losing traction. Now I did have a customer who lowered the car and put Koni sport struts on the car and he said that really did help with the problem. That may be something to think about.

Yep, I'm sure you're right. It's probably pretty common in hatchbacks since most of the weight is in the rear of the car (the hatch on ZX3's way a TON!) Thanks for the suggestion re: a suspension upgrade/lowering.

I'm the second owner. Bought it with 84K on it. Bought if from a girl in college so probably not much maintenance done ;) Not sure about dampers and bushings. I'm having top motor mount replaced today. I'm sure that will help with the overall performance of the car some. Thanks for the reply. I'll take it out for a test spin and let you know.
