Hey Guys,

This probably belongs in the "regional Asia forum" but wanted to share my ride with you guys in the US.

I have a candy red 2012 2.0L DCT Hatchback which is Thailand is called the sport+ model. It is the highest spec available (ST not available here) This model comes fully loaded at a price of US$ 36,000.00 (yeah, I know..) It's a blast to drive and it seems that the power output compared to the U.S. models is higher with 170 HP @ 6600 RPM and 202 Nm (149 lb-ft) @ 4450 RPM.. The car is built in Thailand in a brand new factory openend last year and so far did not have any major issues besides some light grinding/shudder of the DCT :( Luckily by reading these forums I found out about the latest TSB (13-4-5) which I asked them to apply it to my ride and since then the grinding / shudder is gone :)

Not too many mods available in Thailand but I managed to find the original (always careful with copies here) K&N drop in filter (US$ 100,00) and did the snorkel delete, the car definitely feels it has better pick-up in the lower RPM's and runs very smooth through the gears..

Greetz from Thailand

Dan

Very cool! Is the market/car culture there more favorable towards more powerful cars, or do you think the extra power is because they couldn't offer the ST? Cool stuff.

I guess it has to do with emissions which are not as strict strict as in the U.S. or Canada. Thailand also exports the Focus to Australia where it has the same output as the Thai model

Welcome Dan. It's good to hear some perspective from another market with basically the same car (and more importantly DCT) as us.

Are there local Focus forums or car research websites there where you have seen the local population comment on the DCT? Does the DCT get the same bad rap there as it does here?

welcome Dan,
I just looked at the aussi site listing it at 125 kilowatts,
googled it and 125 kilowatts = 167.627761 hp - maybe gasoline type/ratings differences... (maybe we all just get these numbers with premium gas)

Hi Guys,

The Thai automotive market is a special one., 10 to 15 years ago only a handful of manufacturers produced some of their their cars and pick-up trucks here (Isuzu, Honda, Toyota) but since then the government has been really handing out incentives to position Thailand als the automotive hub in South East Asia and to be honest that worked out pretty well and for this year output will be in the region of 2.5 million units.

The Focus with DCT has received some good reviews locally but the Thais have a strong tendency to comfort and do not prefer the "direct" feel of the DCT compared to the 4 or 5 speed torque converter slush boxes.. the CVT is also gaining popularity here due to it's smooth acceleration. To see a Focus in the wild is still pretty rare. On the other hand the Fiesta with DCT is very popular and does not fall far behind the Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris.

I bought the Focus because I like the way it looks, handles and offers features like active-city-stop and automatic parking that are even not available
on D Segment cars like the Accord and Camry which cost at least $15,000.00 more.

I know there a lots of Thai forums which discuss the DCT on the Focus and Fiesta but they're all in Thai which for me, as a Dutchmen, is impossible to read :)

Interesting times also lay ahead as Ford Thailand is planning to introduce it's Ecoboost technology first for the Fiesta / Focus around the middle of 2014 by using a 1.0 L 3-cylinder turbocharged engine (125 HP and 148 lb-ft of torque available @1400 RPM) and shortly afterwards the 180 HP 1.5 GDTI 4-cylinder with 177 lb-ft @1500 RPM (only available for the Focus) So I'm pretty sure what my ride in 2015 will look like

Not sure how reliable of a source wikipedia is but the output numbers for the North American market seems to be slightly less than the Thai model with 119 KW (160 hp) and 198 nm of torque (146 lb-ft) Could indeed be a difference in test methods and doubt that you would feel the difference..

Hi Dan,

I have bought a blue Sport+ almost a year ago and have experienced the same grinding issue. Have you found any solution for that?

Also, when in "manual" mode, shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear is very very slow. Do you also experience that?

Cheers!
